My wife is going to a long arm quilting class in Des Moines July 25 and 26. Of course I am going as well. As a tractor enthusiast, can anyone recommend something for me to do while I am there. Thanks. Paul

I haven't been there yet, but I think the Farmall Land museum is about 90 miles west of there (Avoca, IA). The website is www.farmall-land-USA.com

If you go there, let us know how it is.

Also, there is a John Deere factory in the area that makes self propelled sprayers, I don't know if they give tours or not. It might not be their build season right now.

Avoca is great, even tho I wear green undies. Even has a lounge/sitting room for mom. Very well done, I enjoyed the high wheeled tractor, the English M and power units.

Check out the Kinzie Innovation center. It's probably a solid hour east of DSM. If you like ag history, the Living History Farms working museum is a great way to spend 4-5 hours. Eating at The Machine Shed restaurant there is a must do as well.

Not tractor but: Harbor Freight on Army post road near Southridge mall, Northern hydraulics on Meryl Hay near I-80 north side, Bass Pro at Altoona (NE of Des Moines), Mills farm and Fleet at Ankeny just north of DSM, Also sportsmens warehouse there too.

Second on Machine Shed restaurant on west side off of I-80/I-35.

The Living History Farm is a great place to spend the better part of a day. www.lhf.org

Yep, the Machine Shed is a good one for eating. If you're into pizza, The Tavern is hard to beat; they're located in the Valley Junction district of West Des Moines. There is another one by Lowes off I-80, but it doesn't have the ambience of the original location.

When i have time to waste i go to Colfax(30 mins east on I-80) Two tractor salvage and resale yards on north side of interstate. Can usually spend coupla hrs walking around and seeing what can be seen. Manny whole tractors for sale and as many for salvage

Gosh, thanks to everyone for the comments. Many of these my wife would like also so maybe we can do both solo and together trips. Thanks again to all of you. Paul
