Ring gear's on

I made way too much of that job in my mind. I laid the flywheel on a block,hit the ring gear with the air chisel in one spot,hit it at 180 degrees,came back to the first spot and hit it again.I don't think it took more than three seconds for it to drop right off.
I laid the new one on,ran the torch around it twice real slow and it started to drop on,but crooked. I took a small ball peened hammer and tapped the high spot,then went all the way around once and that was all there was to it. I put a pair of welding gloves on,stood it up and rolled it around to make sure it was all the way on. I came in and ate supper while it cooled then went back out and put the flywheel on.
Nothing to it.
 
When I was just starting out as a mechanic in '70 , My boss told me to take a flywheel to a clutch rebuilder down the road for a new ring gear . The mechanic there had a set up made from 2 segments of an old ring gear with wooden handles , and they were attached to the leads of an arc welder. He flips on the welder, and stabs the ring gear in the middle of each side with the segments . The sparks flew , the ring got hot , and it fell right off ! The new one went on the same way , and the kid learned a new trick.....
 
Yep you worked way to hard. Flywheel in the freezer over night and ring gear in the oven at 500 degrees till it turns off then plug the flywheel out and drop ring gear on. No hammer needed no hard work other then lifting the flywheel and setting it on something flat
 
But you had it all planned out in your mind. I find things work best if I take time to mentally plan what I'm going to do and how I'm going to do things - and it goes together much easier.
 
Tossed my ring gear on the gas grill, heated it to a little over 700 deg. it fell right on. I was surprised how easy it was. Poured a little beer on it and it was ready.
 
That's the complicated kind of thing I was worried about. Would have taken all night and then some. I seriously doubt I spent more than three or four minutes on this one.
 
Well if you wait till winter to do one it is just the time it takes the oven to get up to 500 degrees. Where your at winter would have the flywheel cold enough to drop it on. Last one I did I probably could have left the flywheel out of the freezer since it drops on so well it almost went to far on
