Power King 2418 versus 1614

have researched this forum and found some great information, but I am in need of some quick information. I have located 2 Power king tractors that are both about 4 hours from me. One is a 2418, man stated bought to restore 6 months ago and bought a older truck instead. Knew nothing else about tractor. The other is a 1614, son said father bought new amd has been sitting awhile but runs great. Both comesides with similar attachments, but only the 1614 has the belly mower. I wish to maintain 5 acreage of thick, heavy grass no hills in the south, while using the push blade to move burn piles and planting a small garden. I have read that the Koyler 18hp had problems and no new parts are being made. My question is this, is the 24 make a significant hight difference for my chores and will the 14hp be strong enough for my chores. Also note that the 2418 has dual transmissions. They both would cost me around $2000. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

First of all, I suggest you google Power King. There is a club online for them. Secondly, the Power king is designated by the first number being the size of the rear wheels and the second 2 numbers is usually the horsepower . I have a 2410 which is a 1958 10 HP with 24 inch farm style tires . If I were buying I would get the one with the double transmission. At our show last weekend a guy that owns one said that in lo-lo the tractor would climb a rope. I love my old PK. Has original 10 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. Kohlers are very reliable engines.
I would go for the 24118 if it had the double trasmission. Also, refer to the Garden Tractors forum down below. They will help you a lot

I have a Power King 2418 and it gets regular use around my 5 acre spread. It's a great little tractor because it is small enough to get into anywhere but has enough traction
to do a respectable amount of work. That said, I would not want to rely on this tractor, or any Power King for that matter, to do as much mowing as we both have. The PK mower
deck only goes on a few times per year (mostly just for the fun of it) while a modern sub-compact diesel does the real mowing work. It would take me twice as long to mow with
the 2418 and I already spend enough time at that task.

As for the dual transmissions, I find I hardly ever use mine and leave the front tranny in high gear 99% of the time. The main purpose of this option was to get creeper gears
for running a tiller or snowblower, neither of which I have. It is handy for slowly backing into tight spots and the 2-2 gear splits the regular 1st and 2nd which is sometimes
helpful. Other than that I find it more of a novelty than something really useful.

My wife bought a 2418 with the two trannys, which were made by Crosley. Because they are both the same size there is too much stress put on the rear one and they failed often. Ours did. My friend had Croslys and lots of parts. Wondered for a while why all his transmission sold so easily. Maybe someday I"ll put a heavier model A Ford one in ours.

That's why I always run the front tranny in high (1:1 ratio) and do all my normal shifting with the rear one. That way the rear transmission doesn't see any more torque load than what it would if installed by itself. Besides, the rear lever is easier to reach anyway!

I have a 2414, 24" tires and 14 hp. It seems to have plenty of power. The second transmission was
made for snowblowing and rototilling, to get slower speeds. Hydraulics would be a plus. These
tractors seem to have a good reputation, although I don't have a lot of experience with mine I like
it. I have a 1614, the same model as the 2414, but it is a future project. One is a 1971 the other a
1972, both have the two transmissions, and hydraulics. It will be interesting to be able to compare
the two when I get the second one running. If I was really going to load one down I think the 16"
rears would take some of the torque requirement off of the drivetrain, smaller wheels needing less
torque to turn. For most things I don't think it would matter too much. Oh, won the slow race at
the local tractor games last year with the 2414. If I get beaten it will be incentive to get the
1614 going as it will go even slower.
