my starter update

I took it in to the shop. I was calm and showed him that you could see the shiny copper. He said that this would not be happening if I had brought the entire starter in the first time. I agreed, although he did have the entire starter last time I returned it them. When I returned from Menard's, he asked me to come with him.... OH OH??? He showed me that it works just fine in his test stand and that he had removed one shim from the starter drive and that it is good now. I asked him if I owed anything and he said no. AS I headed to the truck, I decided to go back and give him $10 anyway.
I hope this is the end of this problem

One shim will not fix the through bolt failure to go through. He found (probably) what he, or others, did wrong. Giving him 10 was a gift, but pasified the situation. All electrical repair needs to be done with the entire unit in hand. Lets hope it spins the engine as well as it should. Jim

He added insulation to the bolt. How he did that I don't know, but lets hope for the best.

There are no shim washers as such in that starter. With the original style drive there should be four washers. Two of them are the same and have a smaller inside diameter. They go one on each end of the armature to provide a larger surface than the step in the shaft to control end play. The other two have a larger ID and slide over the armature shaft on the drive end and limit the travel of the starter drive gear. One of them is about 50% thicker than the other one. If you use the newer style drive these two washers are no longer used.
