Got 'er smokin'!

Hey guys.

I have posted occasionally about my Ford 4500 project. I bought this backhoe with many of the engine parts literally in five gallon pails. Kinda like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

Well a year later I have resleeved the block, replaced the pistons, one rod, bearings, cam, lifters, oil pump, water pump, starter and ring gear. I also welded in a mounting tab on the cast iron oil pan.

I got the engine turning over, got oil pressure and fixed a couple of minor fuel leaks and bled the injector lines.

I opened the fuel cutoff and gave her about half throttle. She cranked over about ten times and started!

It is holding about 75psi oil pressure, starts easily and idles well. My wife and stepson happened to be in the shop and were cheering.

My first diesel rebuild.

Thanks to all who helped me out with good advice.

Congrats. You'll find that to be a beefcakes machine. I abuse mine all the time and it keeps taking it. Real strong digger.

Good for you, glad to hear it. Something you said though, "Got 'er smokin'!". A couple of months ago pulled into the local fuel station and there was an absolute gorgeous Mack R series tractor and grain trailer. Thing was absolutely beautiful. Polished Budds, lots of chrome, nice paint, lights. Had it all. This was an incredible tractor, show condition. The fella, farmer that owned it walked out, figure in about his '60's or so, I stopped him and complimented him on his rig. Nice fella. Smiles from ear to ear, looks at me and says, "She sure blows smoke". I haven't seen a smile like that in a long time.

"Got 'er smokin'!". That's great to hear. Use 'er in good health for a long, long time.
