my 2n has a 12v conversion in it. the only way I can tell if it's charging is to clip my volt meter m up?to the battery and watch the volts come up. The amp meter does not move. I don't know the proper way the alt. should be installed. Dose any one know the proper way to hook the system up? I know it's charging because after 20 min. of fast idle the batt. comes up in volts. Any one have a wiring diagram? Thanks, Smokey

Just search "2N wiring diagram", many to choose from.

Several possibilities why the amp meter doesn't register:

It may be stuck, dead from vibration, moisture, damage, old age.

It may not be connected properly. When converted from 6v positive ground to 12v negative ground, the polarity of the meter would have to been reversed to read correctly.

There is a good chance when the alternator was installed, the original wire from the generator was abandoned an a new wire was run directly to the battery, bypassing the amp meter.

A simple solution would be to replace the amp meter with a volt meter fed from the ignition switch.

This. A volt meter will tell you everything you need to know about your charging system.
