My farmall M had issues starting recently. The starter button was getting hot and not working. after testing the starter it was toast. It is a 12v conversion. I replaced the starter and rewired a new button and ignition. The tractor started great and ran great but after I parked it for the week and tried starting it again the starter button gets hot and it won't Turn over. I tried the old button and it done the same thing? Do I have two bad buttons or could it be in the ignition box? Can anyone help me on what is the problem here?

Check ALL of the cable ground contact points and make sure that it bare metal to bare metal.

First thing I would do would be to make sure the positive cable from the starter button to the starter isn't grounding somewhere. Or maybe the cable has a bad spot, corrosion or something, creating a high resistance between the button and the starter. I don't see how ignition could be involved.

Are you sure the starter isnt locked up. Just holding the starter button is NOT the way to go. If you push the button and starter doesent turn something is wrong you just dont hold button down.

Maybe the starter is binding up on the flywheel. Try turning the motor by hand and see if that frees up the starter. Otherwise check connections like others have said. If you are holding the button in and it is getting hot and smoking then the connections are probably good but there is an issue with the help starter/flywheel itself. If there is no heat at any spots then it is probably a connection issue.

The amp rating on today's new starter buttons is way on the wrong side of usable. That button should not get hot. The fix may be using a Ford starter relay for the control, and the button can be used to energize the S terminal. Jim
