Finished cultivating my late corn yesterday. Brought home the H to switch the sweeps around so they would throw dirt on the rows better to cover weeds completely on late corn. While I was doing a walk around and greasing it I noticed that the vertical shaft for the steering was broken....again. I repaired it about 2001 I guess the last time it broke. I beveled the shaft and drilled it as well. I drilled it at 5/8 and fitted a 6" rod in it. Then I heated it and welded with nickel rod. It lasted 15 yrs. I know that my grandfather had broken and welded it at least 4 times prior to my last repair. Not sure what to do with it now. I do not believe that any repair will be permanent at this point. I will probably fix it again just to get thru the cultivating season. But I guess I need to find a good used one. Maybe even get lucky and find a NOS?
I am open to suggestions if anyone has any for a permanent suggestion for repair. Or if anyone knows of a good salvage yard around Mason MI.
Thanks All!!!
Matt
