Glad that's over

After driving around for 175 miles I finally got my 96 Dodge's computer to reset all the codes. Then went through the smog check ok. What a waste of time, and gas. I could have been making money mowing instead of what I just went through. I had plenty of time to do the smog check, but waited until the last week before it was due. Now I can pay almost 300.00 bucks to drive on our bad roads. All this was caused because I removed the battery to install another one. When I did this, the computer had to be reset by driving. Stan

That is a pain. To keep from loosing settings you can rig a spare battery to a cigarette lighter or power port by using an adapter that will fit the port or lighter socket. Keeps the system alive enough that you don't loose settings or computer memory. This assumes you lighter or power port is hot all the time when the key is off.

What was the panic to get it tested this week, couldn't it have been done anytime this month?

When changing the battery, could you connect one of those battery booster packs to the cables to keep from loosing settings?...or am I missing something?

A correction of terminology here....
A reset occurred when you changed the battery.
Driving was required to restore data to the monitors to bring it to a ready state for testing.
Resetting is how codes are erased from memory.

It was due the 30th of this month. I would have done it sooner if I thought I was going to have a problem. The last time I had to replace the computer to get it to pass. I figured No problem this time.

Most Dodges have headlights. Couldn't you have earned money mowing in the daytime and drove around in the late evening or early morning?

So did you pass? You didn't say.

You know the nice thing about having a Volkswagen pickup? If I ever have to get it smogged, which I don't, all I have to do is open the glove compartment and press the green "Pass Smog Test" button hidden at the back before they hook me up and it goes from running on eight cylinders to one very lean one, and after I pass and am done and get outside away from those guys I press the red "Back To Normal" button and go back to running on all eight very rich and powerful cylinders and drive off. Its great to have in case I ever need it.

That's just what I want to do after mowing all day, is driving around. Maybe when I was 50 I could have pulled it off. Stan

$300 to license a 20 year old truck?! Geez oww, and I thought $70 for my 96 is robbery! Tell me, why in the world does anyone stay in Califonistan?

Somebody's got to live there... Glad you got it resolved. I follow the rules, even if they are stupid. Just the way I was raised. Expect most folks on this list agree...

John

PS - but I try hard to elect folks that do not pass stupid rules...
