Had an appointment today to have some
chickens butchered by Missouri Valley IA. We
typically do them ourselves but we are just
out of time and for the price is was worth
it. Took 30 birds in and including loading,
unloading, and paying it took just under 30
minutes
We drove by a small museum just off I29
that wasn't open, however I took some pics
anyway.
Next we stopped at De Soto national
wildlife refuge to see the steam boat
exhibit. The Bertrand sank on April 1 1865
in the Missouri River while hauling goods
destined for the gold camps among other
things. After the river was straightened in
the 50's and channelled, the wreck was no
longer in the riverbed. In 1968 two people
from Omaha decided to try to find it. They
managed to save quite a bit of the cargo,
even though it had been buried for over 100
years. Most cotton and paper disintegrated
which ruined the clothes which were usually
sewed together with cotton thread. It was
interesting and would be a great place to
watch migrating birds.
