Piston rings

After getting a price from Hastings piston rings for 230.00 for a set of 4 1/2 in. rings, I thought I would call around to ring manufactures. That was out of the question one quoted me 90.00 per ring. That would end up costing more than the tractor is worth. The cheapest I found is a set for 145.00 I guess I will go with that, unless someone knows somewhere to buy separate rings. It's been a long time since I bought rings. I guess everything goes up in price over time. Stan

Depending on the application I second Otto gas engine works. They are good for what I call easy applications, older engines etc. If you require sophisticated rings for a later engine then other sources are better. Hastings quotes individuals full list price in order to protect their dealers and distributor network. A local automotive machine shop will quote you much less for same product. I use Hart's in Cecil Ohio for things like that, they are great to deal with and have a web site.

Yes as some of the custom size ring makers only have basic square cut rings. Fine for hit and miss or slow speed engines but for higher speeds or an air compressor not good at all. I learned that lesson in an air compressor ! Guys at Hastings were VERY helpful in the past.

Norm lives about 6 or 8 miles from me, he built up a shaft for me one time and gave me the tour of his buildings, A/C stuff every where plus an old Corvette.

Try Agkits.com and call or email them. They are also known as Syracuse Crank & Machine. They have plenty that is not listed on their website. They have a reasonable price for rings for the 344 in an HD6 that I'm working on. They have Hastings rings but put their own part number on them.

Here is what I am working with. Oil ring is .250 thick Need 8 Compression ring is 5/32 thick need 12. See what you have. Thanks Stan

Stan, I can't find any other engine that uses combination of rings you have.
I did find this from old Hastings catalog.
Top ring 5/32 is torsional if cast or barrel faced triple chrome.
Second ring 5/32 is torsional
Third ring 5/32 is wiper
Fourth ring 1/4 is chrome rail 3 piece with spacer
Fifth ring 1/4 is cast iron oil
Hasting part number for chrome set is 2C7765
Hasting part # for cast iron set is 7765.
