Thrower problems

My thrower on my JD 346 baler kept giving me
problems today, the rod that trips the thrower
seemed to long, but I could not adjust it any shorter,
so I took it home and cut a half inch out of it and
welded it back together. Now the thrower is working
fine, I just don't understand what happened to make
the rod have to be shorter? There must be wear
somewhere in it.

It's been 41 years since I worked on one of them! I was thinking that rod was spring loaded. The little arm up on the front of the valve pivots on a bushing. That bushing can corrode and cause problems. You don't notice it when tripping it by hand, but it can cause enough resistance that it won't want to work in the field.
