I do not want the upgrade to WIN 10. PERIOD!!!. The privacy issues are my main reason. Win 10 is a operating system with malware built in. Microsoft is going to mine data from YOUR computer to target marketing stuff to you. This is a new revenue stream for them. They want this real bad so they are doing a bunch of dirty trick types of stuff to get you to switch to Win 10. I really think that Microsoft's "forced" up grade should be illegal and there should be class action lawsuit against them. I am a very anti lawsuit type of person but this action by Microsoft is going too far. If I tell you I do not want your free stuff then your should respect that period. I do not care if your free stuff is the greatest thing ever. It should be my decision to down load it or not without coercion.

There are several free programs that stop WIN 10 form down loading. I just used this one several days ago and it works great and is very simple and used simple language in it's agreements. It is " GWX Control Panel". There are others that work too. This one just seemed simpler for a novice user. It is easy to use with common English terms not computer Geek terms.

So just search " GWX Control Panel " An you will find many places to down load this tool.

I wish everyone would use it. I am not necessarily against Win 10 it is just forcing it on people is kind of like computer rape. Microsoft's program actually is pretty good IF you disable much of the data harvesting stuff. I want it to hit Microsoft in the Pocket book so it never tries this again.

So for me I will not run Win 10 of my own free will.

Also some information on continued support of earlier Window operating systems. Many are saying that WIN 10 stops all other support. This is not true!!!! Here are the facts on that.

Vista supported until April 11,2017
Windows 7 supported until Jan. 14th, 2020
Windows 8 supported until Jan. 10th, 2023
Windows 10 only supported until Oct. 14th, 2025

So if your only looking at support, then Wind 10 only adds 2 1/2 years of time.

If you don't think everything you do on a computer isn't being tracked all the time now regardless of your operating system you're kidding yourself. All my important stuff like taxes is on
a computer not hooked to the internet, but if Edward Snowden is correct the NSA can track that computer thru the electric line.

I have no idea HOW anything is tracked but every time one of these Gov't whistle blowers comes out its with more information its how they can get more and more of anyone's business.
There is no such thing as privacy on the internet,on a phone or really just walking down the street.Heck with drones and satilites you can't even take a whizz out behind the barn in private(LOL)

Good luck, Bill Gates has more money than God. You can't touch someone like that. We are just mear peasants to do with as they please.

I agree with you about the privacy issues. Its a huge marketing tool and we are the pigeons. I resent the aggressiveness MS is now showing.

Believe me I am with you on not wanting to be tracked but If that is stopping you from using Win 10 you better stop using Windows anything, or your cell phone or Google search, Bing, or 100s of other cyber things in your life. Your movements online are being tracked for the purpose of targeting, if not by MicroSoft, then by Google, Yahoo, or who whatever websites you visit,, including this one.

I guess a computer operating system is like religion, beer, your brand of pickup truck and politics. Everybody whines about how bad it is, but nobody wants to switch to something different.
I see all the whining about Windows, but the complainers will stay with it. It seems like everybody just keeps using it, complains about it, revert back to the system that they had before 10 took over, but in the end they know that they'll have to get it eventually.
I'm beating a good horse to death here, but take any good working computer that's five years old (one that the Windows system has made obsolete and like molasses in January), load up linux or a variant and break away from Bill Gates. If you are not comfortable doing it, pay a few bucks to some local high school kid. Your Windoze complaints will stop.
BTW, my daughter just graduated with a computer science and programming degree. She starts right out of college with a salary close to six figures. (I don't wish to brag on her too much, but she does know her stuff) She told me that there wasn't a single person in her class that runs the Windows operating system on what they use for personal use. That might tell you something.
This post was made with Ubuntu, a Linux variant. I've use it for about 15 years. It is free, the upgrades are free and is much more secure than any Windows could ever produce.

This whole tracking thing goes back farther than most even suspect. What do you suppose all of those shopper's cards are that every store wants you to use these days?? Whether you go to a drug store, supermarket, department store, or a host of others, they want you to have their card for the "best deals" available. So, we all carry around a wheelbarrow full of these cards so that every little piece of gum that we buy is recorded in somebody's records someplace.

Windows is simply extending that to the internet shoppers and browsers.

Butch: Yes I know Yahoo and google both track usage as well butttttt Yahoo and google DO NOT force me to use their product!!!!! This is what I really object to. If I want to use a stone age computer system that is MY choice not Microsoft's. If they want to not have support for it that is fine but do not FORCE me to use your NEW toy/product.

It really surprises me that more people, including congress, are not more concerned with the data mining, it is a real invasion of privacy.

Don't know,I've only had it for a few hours, but with everything I've been in to trying to find things,I have a hunch the biggest danger is if you use that Cortana feature isn't it? I think that's the one in the commercial that works like that Siri on the cell phone. It's disabled when it dumps this worthless program in to your computer. You have to enable it to use it and it says something about it gathering information if you do.
Joan told my wife how to take the icon for it right off the taskbar so it doesn't get used.

I say let them track me. It's going to backfire on them sooner rather than later anyway. There's going to be so much information flying around here in the next couple of years that it will be impossible to make any sense of it.

Congratulations to your daughter. It will take someone of her skills to keep our tractors running with all the electronics on them but no one qualified will be available to work on them because that is not where the money is. Shops still only pay peanuts to the techs.

From what I'm seeing were (corporations) are pushing toward browser contained apps which are OS neutral.
Win 10 and what it comes bundled with appears to be geared towards the consumer (and consumer habit tracking) when first installed. Not the corporate user or working professional whatever that is (MS office, email, tasks)now a days.

A half hour of Win 10 setting changes and all the social media/cortana/user experience enhancement bloat can be turned off and you're back to a platform to run MS Windows based programs.

My son changed my pc to Ubuntu about a year ago and I also like it. There are a few quirky things about it and I still have windows 7 for some tasks. He tells me I will end up with windows 10 eventually and I'm OK with that.

I get your privacy concerns but unfortunately in todays world you have only tossed a glass of water into the ocean. They know an a lot about you from Windows 7. There is no privacy in todays society unless you have no internet, no credit card, no bills you are paying, no banking accounts - in other words you have to be living in the dark ages.

Traditional Farmer

The reply on tracking via powerlines I got via Chiefio was

It can be done but doesn't work so well

It needs special hardware which likely isn't in any computer you'll buy

And if you're worried put a UPS in as it doesn't work across the battery

What I know about computers would fit on a pin head. I really couldn't care less about whether it's W10, W7 or W3.1 as long as I can use it. I've been using 8.1 for the last 2 or 3 years and get along fine. When I tried W10 it slowed both of my computers down so much that they were almost unusable so I went back to 8.1. I read on here that some are saying that W10 is faster. Why is it slower on my computers??
