loader cylinder repair

I need some advise on putting new seal in lift cylinder old john deere 48 loader. can"t see any way to get shaft and piston out of cylinder. anyone knows how that is done I would appreciated the help. (thanks in advance)

Should be an external snap ring on rod gland that needs to be removed first. Then push the rod gland into the barrel to expose another snap ring. Remove that one and pull the rod, gland, and piston out.

A picture would maybe help us help you. I have seen so many types of cylinder that it is hard to say for sure on some. But as the other guy said may have a hidden snap ring etc.

What Rufus says....if it"s like my 148 cyl. Did all 4 over the years. Yes, they are confusing, but a parts diagram helps. JD likes to hide the snap rings. BTW- leave the hoses on to direct the oil into a pail, instead of all over you! I seat the cyl up against the rings with air pressure, before installing and filling with oil.

I am working on a bucket cylinder from a 148. The snap ring that you can see comes out and then tap the rod in. Then gently drive the exposed part into the cylinder and remove the round snap ring inside the barrel. $85+ for the kit, later you can install it back togather.
