Last horse to be ridden on trailer lighting.

I did a quick search on ebay for trailers and got some ideas. Not to mention federal code violatons,

trailer with no clearance lights on fender.

This gator trailer has no fender clearance lights and lights are not all the way. Another federal lighting violation. I this may be what I'm going for. Use fender for protection and move lights forward a little.

Now this trailer definately has a problem, no lights, no fenders, What would cops do if they caught this one on the road loaded with hay?

You may keeping riding your horse if you want. I found my solution going to copy the gator trailer design. I'm stopping here while my stallion is still alive. Please don't tell me I beat my horse, that's just a roomer started by my ex girlfriend.

How about you just fab something up out of some spare metal roofing material.

I just had to chime in on the trailer lights discussion. I bet of the 10 or 15 trailers of various types that I own not one has every single light working on it. I used to believe they needed to be all perfect. Then maybe not so much but, hey, the back ones work. Then well, one works close enough. Now its just give me the damn ticket. Of all the advances we have made in technology keeping trailer lights working is certainly not one of them.

I have plan's how to fix my problem. I'm
too cheap to buy metals. Only use the free
stuff. No roof tin in my inventory, besides
it would crush like a beer can.

Just because they sell it doesn't make it legal. At work we have had brand new commercial trucks we had to add lights on to meet dot specs

The top 2 trailers don't need fender lights, those are only required for trailers over 30' in length. The bottom trailer is a farm trailer made for hauling corn planter and grain drills behind a travtor from back before planters folded up. Could haul an 8 row corn planter or 20' grain drill on it. Only for farm use behind a travtor tho.

John M,
You are right, I stand corrected. I had to zoom in to see them. Did you zoom in on my sure track that I've had for 5 years. NO CLEARANCE LIGHTS ON MY FENDER. Think I'll burn because my trailer wasn't built according to code ? Or spend time with the politicians from Illinois in the federal prison just a few miles away?

Guy I eat breakfast with, 78 years old ex trucker, son works for DOT, told me rarely if ever will DOT mess with me, I'm too small a fish and not commercial. They have better things to do.

I plan to mount new lights just like the gator trailer, up higher up on the flat spot of trailer, close to the the stake pocket.

Problem solved. Going to weld 4 inch channel or larger to side of trailer to mount light as high as possible to keep plate from getting bent up and out just enough out for plate to fit. Hoping fender will add all the protection I need. That point shouldn't swing out as much as the rear.

Thanks to all,
Signing out.
Giving my horse a rest.

The best suggestion is to quit hitting things with it. There is no reason that you have to keep hitting things with your lights. Any CDL school graduate can tell you that. Take a bit more room to turn. Take your turns wider. Allow for the tail swing. I drove commercial trucks for 20 years, and never had the problems you are having. Try a 53-foot trailer in the financial district of Manhattan.

It takes skill to learn how to handle your vehicle. And that means driving accordingly - not trying to make your trailer collision proof.

That might be true but get in a accident and things change in a hurry. With that said, there is no reason to be hitting things with the trailer lights.

I used to always be sure that every light on my trailers worked. If it didn't, I would fix it before I left the yard. I'm not so picky anymore. I got in a small accident a while back. There was a small car stopped in my lane. He was waiting for some people to walk across a side street before he made a right turn. By the time that I realized that he was stopped, its was too late to stop and I rear ended him. There wasn't a single light that worked on the back of his car. The cop that responded to the accident said that it was my fault and my insurance company said that it was my fault. I have come to the conclusion that working lights are not all that important.

George, I guess you're not familiar with Donahue trailers. These are implement trailers intended to haul very wide equipment. You can see how they work at the link below. If you tried to mount lights or fenders on a Donahue, they'd get ripped off the first time you used it.

Donahue Implement Trailer

It's also a FARM IMPLEMENT, not a trailer.

It hitches to the tractor with a draw pin.

Not to mention it's also almost 10' wide, has low speed hubs and implement tires on it...

Geo, you're really stretching trying to show examples of "illegal" trailers to justify modifying yours so you can play bumper cars with it... This is NOT a "trailer" in the eyes of the law!
