Needed to get two parts for my John Deere swather yesterday . Giving it a look over before I get into the hay field and have a break down . Decided that one of the canvas on the draper head was beat , and under took to put on the spare. Well with it all apart , soon found it was about time for some new bearing too. All but one of the bearings were just common type of bearing , but one bearing , I had to order from Deere . Just a tad over $200.0 . While I was at Deere I thought I had better order a spare canvas ,as my spare was going on , $680.00 for one . Ouch !!! Almost a grand for just two rather insignificant , but crucial parts. Guess I should be glad I can get the parts , and just three days for delivery.Still seems like a lot of doe . Bruce

If you could get back to whoever made it, you could probably buy it for a fraction of that. 24V fuel control solenoid on my Fiat/Allis, now NH dozer, if I remember correctly, was over $200. Local diesel shop got it for about $60. Plastic capscrews which hold the SMV sign on the fuel tank on my Magnum tractor- after pricing at CNH, I went down the road to the Home Depot- 1/10 the price! (I had to settle for white instead of black!)

Something seems to have gone nuts on prices overnight. I needed a 10 foot roll of little 20-40 roller chain the other day,$40. I had to have a hose made for the planter,5 feet of half inch hose, three eights NPT swivel on one end, half inch NPT swivel on the other,$45. Unless something happened to my brain and I just don't remember the value of a dollar, that seems to be about twice what it should have been for both.

I think the Amish here make up canvas, probably for less than that.At least you're good to go. Ben

Getting the sprayer ready to spray wheat yesterday and found the selector valve had cracked after 40 years and leaked. Runnings wanted $119.99 for the valve......TSC had the exact same thing for $64.99. I have found TSC to be 1/2 the price on selected items before.

Sounds good, but most times you need it now, no time to wait for shipping, and it cost a lot to just keep every thing you need on hand.

I didn't realize that Runnings was as big as they are. They are creeping into central MN and I got a good feel for them when I worked in Marshall 2 years back. The Marshall locals said they noticed a shift in pricing when the farm economy was good and it doesn't appear to have adjusted itself. They are not a Mill's Fleet Farm, but than again Mill's isn't what it used to be.

At least I made back a little bit while I was there. One of the Mennonites came in needing a bearing for the steering box on his Oliver 550. He wondered if they could match it up to a Timken number or something. They couldn't. I just happened to have had a new one here. I ran home quick and got it. Charged him $20. Shipping alone would have cost him close to that without a doubt and I don't doubt that the bearing might have cost him $35,but he needed it,I didn't and I felt good helping him out. He got the deal of the day though.

Yeah, just ordered a couple of the drawbar bolts for the 1955 and the 1850. Jeff broke one and I like to keep a spare on hand. Seems I remember the last time I ordered one of them I 'bout had a heart attack! I keep telling myself I am going to re-design that set up and build my own, but I seem to get around to it.

The Nightly Business Report said a couple nights ago that there is undeniable proof that there is runaway inflation - but that the Federal Reserve will not do anything about it as it is an election years. If the Feds raised interest rates, that would reduce campaign contributions from the rich and the politicians don't want that.

Make it tough on farmers who don't have a political voice anymore.

Guy here backed into the JD 80 excavator with dumptruck. New door for excavator is $4400. He isn't driving truck here anymore, just a shovel.

My 756 has a 715 combine 310 German diesel motor in it. The combine engine uses an electric solenoid in the injector pump to shut off the motor. Mine burned out in the field. CaseIH/fiat wants just shy of $1000 for a new one. I can get a reman pump for $1200!

The 323 skid steer needed a down pressure solenoid. I had done the diagnostics Deere told me to do to identify the problem. I took them the machine already dismantled with the problem identified. They had it one morning. The bill? Just a hair under $1,000. It's cheaper to go to the doctor or pay a lawyer than fix equipment!

Bought valve seals for my power stroke diesel a few years back.the international place wanted 99 bucks, got them from ford for 50.same part no.,same package!

It was one those things where the planter was sitting in the field and I needed to get going right now. Just like it was with the hose.

I could tell you about the left hand door (sitting in the seat) of my '09 JD 6140D that popped open going down the road and shattered...$1250.00. Or a couple of meshed sprockets to change the JD1560 drill from high speed to low speed that were $340.00+...BUT -

the best one I can tell you about is when I tried to buy the top of the PTO shield for my Case/IH 5230. Just a plate about 8" x 10" with a couple of little springs. Nothing special. $680.00 the parts man says. I replied (honest reply), I don't need the complete rear of the PTO, just the top lid. That is just the top lid he says. It darn sure was as the sides of the PTO shield were molded into the rearend of the tractor. Just the lid and springs. And any of you who think that maybe that price wasn't that bad, look at a real shield, or a parts view of it, and you will know why I put that price up on a pedestal when you speak of high parts prices...lol! The pic is the tractor, but I wish I had a rear view of it with a closeup of the shield. However, it was a great tractor otherwise. Bob

What is the part # of the expensive bearing? It would be interesting to know what it is and if there are any reasonable aftermarket sources.

Posting that info may help someone out down the road who searches and finds this thread in the archives.

But then, this place thrives on posts that leave out essential information that would assist those who try to help,
