Blue metal can

Which blue can will I get a ticket for
using? How will DOT know my VP can isn't
antique too ? How will anyone know can
doesn't have racing fuel?

With all the talk about color of cans your odds of getting a ticket is almost zero. I have been hauling gas in silver ,red, yellow, blue and other colors for years. I have filled cans at filling station with state and county police watching and never said a thing.

You are not going to get a ticket. I can't imagine anyone really cares what color a 5 gallon can is and any enforcement officer who has time to fiddle with that BS just doesn't have enough to do, or he/she is a raw rookie out to save the world,

I think you got flack over the color because there are a number of folks here who are just plain anxious to tell others they are wrong about whatever the topic is.

I was surprised no one piped up to say that your insurance would be invalid if you had an accident with the wrong color of can on board. The insurance police are among the worst as far as being annoying.

I agree, the local police are not going to be interested.

If there were an accident, the issue would most certainly be brought up if there was a lawsuit.

If there was a fire, and firefighters were injured, yes that may be a problem.

If you were in an OSHA regulated shop, yes you would probably get a citation. But I suspect they would be more concerned with refilling a disposable container.

Just my highly acclaimed opinion! And it's priceless!

Might be a laugh that makes me laugh. Hard to pass the giggle test.

I'm using another blue can in greenhouse hoping to water tomatoes. Hoping VP racing fuel drum will make good V8 tomatoe juice.

Given the nature of gasoline, and that those plastic spouts, both on metal and plastic containers always crack or tear at some point, I'd be more concerned with safety than the police.

Eagle type I safety cans are a pretty good deal, given the type II are almost double in cost. I've switched over to type I's, never thought I'd like the bulky but removable spout, thinking the type II with the flexible nozzle/spout would be better, these work just fine. Keep in the shade, the vapors exhaust slowly if you are careful opening the spring loaded lid. They pour satisfactorily, maybe not the quickest, but what approved fuel can of late does anyways?

Sorry, not paying. Have to bill me. I was simply showing the
Insanity of the law.

Now let's say there is an accident, fire, can goes up in smoke, who will know what color it was? IT will be toast before firedept shows up.

I agree with others, DOT has "bigger fish to fry", or at least I would hope they do, perhaps making sure we are visiting the correct gender rest room facilities at rest stops :). I often carry (2) 5 gallon approved/red containers with gasoline in the trunk. I have never read all the wording on those containers, but my assumption is that DOT would approve, since they are red in color, and they came without a vent all is good if I am ever rear ended (yeah, right). Oh, I forgot, I did drill and put vents on them so I could actually get the contents out in a timely fashion, so perhaps I am in same situation as those blue metal ones. With this said, I vividly recall growing up as a kid my grandmother using a one gallon glass container to store and fuel her garden tiller. I'm with you George, if it works, and price is right it sure beats using glass. I say go for it.

Actually about the only chance for a ticket is if an inspector would pull in while you are gassing up. So the odds are slim and none.

On the other hand get in a wreck with a couple of those cans in you truck and if one of those cans has even a little paint left after the ensuing fire liability wise your are in deep manure.

While your repair to the can is inspiring to some and innovative actually using those cans for gas may not be smart.

Please will every one post under this post not to the one above. I want it to stay at the top of the page.

Can anyone post a link where John Doe driving a non commerical pickup that got a ticket for using the antique cans that used to be blue in the day, or wrong color netal cans?

Can anyone post a link where John Doe driving a non commerical pickup was in an accident and got sued for carrying gas in a can, red, blue pink or what ever color there is?

DOT cares only while "in transport" AND "IN COMMERCE" with the latter being the key here. If this is for your personal use DOT won't intervene. The basis for DOT regulations is to provide public safety for commercial transport of 'hazardous' or 'dangerous' goods.

Here's one example: 12v batteries. In transport, they [or the cardboard box they are inside] are labeled as corrosive. There is no DOT label on the battery in your tractor, car, or truck. Once installed, it is no longer transport in commerce.

Talk about beating a dead horse! The DOT or the local cops don't care what color the cans are. They don't even care that, for some reason, the spouts are made from used soda bottles. If you get into an accident and someone gets burned, the insurance companies and their lawyers will care. Your house and its shingle roof will have a new owner. Nothing will probably ever happen. If you're willing to take that chance, go for it! It seems, to me, that approved cans would be cheap insurance. You can probably find some at a yard sale or on Craiglist, if you don't want to pay for new ones.

Wrong, not beating it to death, just exposing it for what it is, a joke played on us by someone in the government that I've never seen enforced. Have you enforced? One time blue was OK, now it's not. Don't you find the humor? The irony?

Funny. But if it really was recycled metal from my area, there would be a lot of rust inside the can.

Another fact, a few years, rusty roof metal was bringing $200 a ton at the recyclers. So you may be right, metal gas cans aren't cheap.

I've had my antique gas cans for a very long time. Still good.

Looks like they give outn a few tickets every so often.

You are kidding right? Asking about lawsuits? If a person was injured because of a fire caused by your cans you KNOW they would sue the snot out of you. Heck a woman sued because she was dumb enough to ride around with a hot cup of coffee between her legs. And with as many GoPros and dash cams are out there someone would have vid of that pop bottle top blue can launching through the air before it burst into flames.....

Just because not everyone sees that as a smart idea is no reason to get mad. Be happy that we care enough to caution you about consequences should something bad happen. Would you rather we sit back, tell you what a great idea it is, then laugh if something bad happens?

Maybe not beating it to death, but you have certainly gotten all the mileage out of this topic that you possibly could! The color of the can is there to tell the first responders what is in the can. If you painted that can red and someone got burned because the Coke bottle neck came off and doused someone in flaming gas, your house would still have new owners. If you had an approved blue kerosene can with gas in it and you could prove that it was exactly the same as the same model of red can, you would probably be able to win a lawsuit. I'm cheap too. I've transported gas in plastic oil buckets in the past, but not these days.

The rest of the story, Cops issue tickets for illegal gas containers which were not 5
gallon cans painted the wrong color.

Police said a New York man pumped $400 worth of gasoline into these three unapproved
containers Tuesday. The gas was returned to the station's tanks after police and
firefighters arrived on the scene.

They were three large plastic drums. $400 in gas is a lot of gas.

Rick . I'm not mad. Just think some over
react,. Ex. I posted about a woman that
rolled into my dump trailer while I was
stopped at light. No damage to my trailer.
She told me to leave. She didn't care her
car was damaged. I took a picture of her
cat. No info exchanged. I left like she
required. Nothing happened. You would have
thought I committed a crime, going to get
sued. Hit and run.

What no one mention is 3 strikes in 5 years
insurance will cancel You and then you are
on a black list. Good luck getting
insurance. Indiana is a not fault state.
If I were rear ended 3 times in five years,
Insurance Will drop me, even if I'm not at
fault. Been there, Been blacklisted.
Some people here over react. I'm 67 and
never been in an accident, my kid's were
when they were younger and on my insurance.
Never been sued. Never got a ticket. How
many can say that?

Have you been talking to my ex girlfriend? Did.
she told YOU I beat my horse to death, don't believe her. My horse is healthy and alive. It comes in first or second, never died . Ex is.
Lying.
