What would do it? Chicken question

Just went out and checked all the chickens. Big chickens are fine in their big coop. The light was still unplugged in the little chick coop and there were 3 chicks inside, one on the edge, and one we found over by the truck, about 50 feet away. We used to have 6 total. Looking around we find a very thin line of feathers leading to the woods. The trail was not direct, zigzagged and went under trees and bushes very low and stiff. Can't find any tracks. Here and there there's a bigger clump of wet feathers. What would do this? Wouldn't think dogs, they wouldn't fit where the feather trail went. It was my fault as I took the chicks out to free range and new that one of them doesn't yet know how to fly back in, and that is the missing one. Would a cat do this? I thought I had all the chicken predator stuff figured out by now but I guess not. Search to be continued in the morning.

I'm thinking so. I put out the small trap last night, probably about inches square and 18 inches long. It was under the same place where the trail of feathers went under a low evergreen this morning with almost everything eaten out of the trap. Thus I'm guessing it had a long tail that the door landed on so when it struggled around enough it got out.

Neighbor is constantly using a live trap and catching possums. He should shoot them,
instead he takes them for a ride down the road, only for them to return. Once we
asked him is he got a new dog. Come to find out it was momma fox and 3 cubs living in
his barn. A 22 took care of that problem.

As for me, I would have your chickens for supper. I helped my neighbor 4 years convert
part of his old chicken coop into hay storage. I coughed so hard my ribs hurt. A month
later I was diagonalized with a fungal infection, histoplasmosis. Deadly fungus found
in chicken poo. Learned it common with farmers in Indiana. I grew up with chickens,
never had a problem. Please be careful around chickens, especially when you are
stirring up the chicken poo. Keep kids away too.

Probably had a steel roof on the chicken coop that was installed with something other than a DeWalt tool..........

I'm so stubborn I've been known to stay up just to get something like that. Sit in your pickup with the window rolled down and wait. I'd just think happy thoughts with my 20 guage in my lap waiting.

Bret,He will have to get George to rig up a critter detector powered by a Dewalt radio/charger that blasts out Harry Belofonty music when a critter appears. That will scare them off.
