Fume extractor fan for welding?

Has anyone ever used one of these fans for a welding fume extractor in their shop? This one is a 4". Im in the process of making an extractor with a flexible pipe to place right next to where Im welding. I have used a shop vac to see if collecting the fumes at close range would work and it will. I have a way to vent it to the outside.

Looks like a good idea, there.. I wish I would have had access to one of those during my welding days, but the 6010 got to my lungs now..Don't have much breath anymore..

That looks like a remote bath fan. It is used so folks don't have to listen to the fan. I don't know if it has the suction that you need.

That is what I was wondering. It would be placed fairly close to the work area but then
noise is a factor at that point.

Some of the finest fume extractors and room evacuation rigs I've used were made from old furnace blowers. Buy a 12" to 16" starter boot, screw it to either side of clamshell and connect flex-duct. In case you wonder how many cfms the blower moves, ranges from about 800 cfm on the smallest residential furnaces up to about 2,000cfm large residential units and most are 3 speed. I like gas blowers for the conveniounce of 120 volts but electric/heat-pump blower is fine if you have 240 volts available.

Those move a lot of air. I have a dust sucker( for want of a better name) that I made with one. I rigged it up to pull air through four furnace filters in series. Placed close to the table saw it keeps dust down very well. I made a squirrel cage blower from scratch from Dave Gingery's book with a 1/3 hp motor and rigged it to pull sawdust from the table saw and with 20 feet of plastic 4" pipe it removes sawdust and chips and exhaust them outdoors.
If I wanted one for welding I would use a furnace blower. You have to cover part of the inlet if you don't have enough back pressure. They are designed to operate with back pressure and without they will over speed and pull enough amps to burn the motor up.
