JD 720 shifting problem

Having trouble shifting 720 from one side to the other it will go but it takes a lot of wiggling around to make it shift shifts ok on either side when it gets there I suppose something worn out on the shifter any suggestions

Mine had a similar problem. I ended up buying a reprint service manual online to help. If you take the shifter off you can see down into the transmission and see what's going on.

The end of the shifter has a ball shape that rides between 2 plates to do the shifting. Those plates were wore on mine. I welded them back up and ground it flat. Also had to adjust the alignment of the shafts. I don't remember how now, but I remember it was pretty straight forward in the service book, and it worked.

The worst part is, I think you have to take off the flywheel and engine side cover behind it to get to everything.
