am looking to buy long 2460 with loader tractor data.com list info having live pto that means 2 stage clutch operation yet on lever on floor has it reads independent or /( ground synchronius) which sould link to tire speed running only as tractor is moving. I need to know for real is it really mechanical independent or hydraulic independent help me out :?: :?:

I have a Long of that type, different size. The pto system works as stated. The pto lever on the transmission case puts the system in either ground speed, in
which it works like an older tractor with no live pto, or in independent mode. One advantage for the ground speed mode is that when the tractor is in reverse
the pto will run backwards. Good for clearing a plug in a square baler, for example. This lever is best engaged with the motor off and the independent pto lever
disengaged. For regular independent pto operation, which is 99% of the time, raise independent lever and engage lever on transmission case to the independent
position. Lowering the independent lever engages the pto then regardless of motion of tractor.

The tractor does have a 2 faced clutch, not unlike the MF 35 system from the 1950s and many others. In that system, the foot clutch pedal stopped the forward
motion of the tractor at the half way point of travel and by pushing the pedal the rest of the way down(with effort, at least no the ones I have sat on, never
owned one) disengages the pto. On the Long and some other tractors, The separate lever disengages the pto and the foot clutch stops the motion of the tractor.
It is important to leave the independent lever down and engaged as much as possible to prevent undue wear on the throwout bearing. If you wish to disengage the
implement when turning around, that is fine, but if you are , for example, going to a field on the other side of a highway the pto should be disengaged so that
the independent lever can be put in the down position. I have owned a tractor with real independent pto(an Oliver) and there are some differences, but for all
practical purposes the Long has independent pto.

keh you refer to raise independent lever < not sure were the raise lever is> to disengage before place the switch on trans case switch<side to side>from syncroius into independent, with your help I will follow you words & look for were you say it is located Monday when I go to close the buy of my tractor Long 2460 with loader Also to switch the lever to independent on trans case side to side between my legs <I have found is location> help me before I pay; you said leave the independent <were ever that is>down and engaged to save throwout bearing please help clear is up right thanks david 2460 Long Are their 2 levers 1 side to side &1up and down to operate Pto

Independent lever on my Long is to the left of the steering wheel and is linked to the clutch. Not sure on 2460, they may have changed it to the right side. It
must be up and disengaged to engage the side to side lever. To engage with engine running foot clutch must be down, best to let engage idle as slow as possible to
prevent gear grinding.
