Case/David Brown 885

"City" friend is moving to the country and looking for a general purpose light duty tractor and asked me about this tractor. I am an old IH/JD man and have never seen a Case/David Brown tractor. Does this tractor have a good track record? Looks good but that can be mis-leading. Any thoughts? Thanks. JD http://nashville.craigslist.org/grq/5549914989.html

I had a 885g for about a month. That was too long. Biggest complaint was comfort. Was a pain to get on and off. Steering arm was in the way of the foot platform. Seemed like it might be an okay little utility tractor, just not comfortable. Seemed like parts were kind of available but sketchy. Would probably have to get ahold of the right dealer. Our local cih dealer wasn't too interested in helping me.

we sold dozens of them great tractors, everyone we sold had hydrostatic steering so no steering arm, they sip fuel and have great gear selections,, parts have never been a issue for me, I own a CASE 380CK which is the industrial version of the 885 just my opinion though

I'm a little puzzled on that one. The seat's not original, but the engine doesn't look to be either. Why is the hood cut for the distributor? Is that the right power steering pump?

I'd be a little cautious that the new paint job might just be lipstick on a pig on that one.

I would advise him to leave that tractor where it is. I have owned several, and that one looks like it has been pieced together. But even if it were not, that is too much money for that tractor.

We only got in one 885 gas all the rest were dsl's,, the engine is correct as I remember them, the power steering system is just like mine here,,

I've got an 850 gas,in the form of an Oliver 500. The distributor sits down along the side of the block and under the hood where it should be on that one. Of course, that's an old Crop Master engine I believe.

The hood/ steering gear are like that from the factory, a diesel would have the pump where the distributor is. They were a decent little tractor, good as a second light duty tractor. Grille is not original, fenders look uneven but if it runs out ok, the price is where it should be. Ben

I had one back about thirty years ago for about three years. I sold it to get a bigger DB, a case 1490. The 885 was good. I bought it at auction, for about $1400. After I fixed the two little problems that it had I didn't have any more problems except for getting on and off. The hood is supposed to look the way it does. If you could get it for under $2,000 and you are nimble, it should make you a good tractor.

Case Nutty, I also have a Case 380CK. Mine has a grading plow on it. I also have the shop manual for it. Mine is missing the counter wheight. #1200 lbs? I am going to put a high-low mast and forks on the back end. Then it will work alot better, and I can add wheight to it if and when needed. What are your thoughts, as to doing that? What is yours set up as? MTP...Email open also

My neighbor bought a 885 new back in the day, and still uses it. Never had the engine apart. Hydraulics don't work as they should. I owned a David Brown 995 for several years. Good running tractor, lots of power, and very good on fuel.

that will help a lot but I do not recommend lifting with the mast when the 3pt is up, a guy here I know did this with a 3000FORD and kept blowing the rockshaft seals as he was over loading the system

mine just has the ROPS and was used as a highway mowing tractor in AZ, later units can have a fwd/rev shuttle mine is a early one and has the same pattern as a 885

Case Nutty, Thanks for the reply/advice...I hadn't thought of lifting with the 3pt up, but ya never know, what a given day brain storm will produce...LOL... Thanks for the heads up advice. I don't know if you have the shop manual, If you don't and I can be of any help in the future just give a yell...MTP
