Need to exterminate the Wild rose

I need some advice about killing wild roses and brush. We have offered free use of about 10 acres of fenced pasture that hasn't been grazed in 3 years. I can brush hog most of the brush down or clip it close with the saw but I know some of this will come back if I don't treat it when cut. The roses seem to double in growth if mowed without treatment. I've heard Crossbow might help without killing the grass. But I've also heard Trimec, Pastire guard and 2 4D Amime might be the fix. I'm thinking about spraying with a marking die, brush hog and spray again to treat the cut ends. What product works? We won't be putting livestock on the land this year so I am not concerned about persistence with grazing this year. I just want the roses and brush gone to have good ground for next year.
 
Bush hogging after spraying will accomplish nothing, you need to spray and allow time for the herbicide to kill the roots.
 

Understood, and a good point. I guess I might have clearified I intend to use the marking die to locate the brush stubs after the chemicals have done their job with the foliage to go back and spray the stubble after mowing to give them another dose and really kill the buggers.
 
Go into the meat goat business they'll thrive on the eating the wild roses,plus goats are a lot more profitable than cattle now anyway.Their prices didn't fall
when cattle did.

I have had good luck on roses with a product call Tordon 101 made by Dow. This product has 2-4-D in so if you have thistles it will get them too. An other product that has worked roses and brush along fence lines is a product call grazon I am not sure who makes it. If you have sandy soil the Tordon could leach. I am not sure where you are located, but I am from Alberta and got the product in Canada. I agree with David G., do not mow before or after you spray. For the Herbicide to work properly the plants must be green and growing. I would not mow until the plant is obviously dead.
 
I have used Crossbow and the generic form for quite a few years and it is very effective on multiflora rose. The Pa. Game Commission at one time encouraged land owners to plant the stuff because they saw it as a good food source and cover for wildlife. It has now spread every where and is difficult to control.

I'm located in west michigan, just south of Grand Rapids. I've read some stories about products this spring and felt like they were written by the sales departments of the manufactures. I knew I would get honest recommendations from our group.
 
Put 5 tons per acre of lime. If you do a soil test. I bet you will find your soil is acidic, thats what roses like
 
Garlon, Pathfinder, Crossbow will work are less toxic than Tordon. Tordon will sterilize the soil and everything in it. Nothing will grow for some years where it is used in high concentration.
 
that is not true of tordon. i have sprayed 10,000s af acres on roadsides with tordon k . up to 32 oz per acre. it does have a 1/2 life of 6 mo. this gives 16 oz / acre left after 6 mo.it will keep any broadleaf plants out for 1 to 2 years.


it will not do anything to grass of aNY kind
 
I had great results with goats. They will kill the roses and brush by keeping the leaves picked off, and leave the grass.
