MF188 OR Ford 6600

My deceased uncles estate is being sold off and I have the choice of either his MF188 or Ford 6600 and I'm torn. Which would you choose?

The 188 is the multi power version 2wd around 1976 4600hrs

The ford 6600 is a 1977 model 2wd with dual power. 4300 hrs

they are both cab-less versions and just have ROPS Bars.

cosmetically both are in similar condition and were used for the same jobs on the farm. I believe he looked after both extremely well mechanically. Both could do with a repaint though.

Can you see why this is difficult? I would think they both compare very well to each other. I can only have one, Cousin gets the other.

The Ford!! It's just an improved /added power version of the old 5000.IMHO one of the best tractors Ford ever made.

Seems like the Ford is the bigger better tractor. Does it have 540 or 1000 PTO? And does it make a difference to you?

Looks like a strong consensus for the Ford.

I think both have the 540 PTO.

Are they both just as easy to find parts for? Anything I need to watch out for as far as faults?

Parts shouldn't be a particular problem for either. What isn't available through the main line parts suppliers should be in the
aftermarket...
The biggest worry I'd have with the Ford is the condition of the block. That generation was known to pinhole, particularly if the cooling
system wasn't properly maintained. So that could cost you some money for a bore/sleeve job if it does leak. Aside from that it's pretty
well bomb proof.
I'm not really familiar with the MF faults... other than the multi-power probably has an over running clutch that will not hold back in
high.... which sucks in my opinion. If the Ford has dual power, it's a far superior system. Ford will also have better hydraulics in my
opinion...
Also, if you feed any ether into the Massey you can plan on spending money.

Having a dealer nearby is not a factor with either tractor. Neither the dealers nor the manufacturers have any interest in supporting old tractors.

Take the Massy and then tell me where the 6600 is at so I can get it.
Kidding aside I'll take a Ford dual power over a Massy multi power any day.

Ok I've ended up with the Ford 6600. Picked it up yesterday and appears to be running well, all fluids seemed fine. Had to put about 3 liters of hydraulic trans in the back, was down a little.

I now read a lot of these have problems with pourus engine blocks??
should I be concerned?
anyone know what percentage of these tractors were affected by this?
I'd be guessing the engine would need to be bored out and sleeved.

You need to pick up a bottle of SCAs and test strips at your local heavy truck dealer. Personally I believe that a coolant filter is a good idea. There are many online sources for these. The block could very well outlive you, it is hard to tell, but no need to repair it unless it does actually penetrate.
