I haven't followed any new regulations regarding ROPS. For years, a ROPS had to be certified by actually testing a ROPS to be sure that it would protect the operator in a rollover. I know people who made their own ROPS that looked good - but it was never tested to be sure that it was safe.

I also knew people who, for certain situations, cut the ROPS apart to remove it and then welded on plates so they could bolt the ROPS back on the unit when the unit went back into regular service. To be legal, that should have been tested and re-certified.

Have you used any ROPS that wasn't original and certified?

The ROPS for my 35 is usually a straw hat or a gimme ball cap. Neither one original or certified. TDF

Dick2,

I have a 1973 Ford 2000 and a 1964 Ford 4000. Neither have ROPS bars on them, but I wish I could find one for each of them. My farm is very hilly, and although I haven't rolled a tractor yet, one of the right-of-way maintainers did roll one on one of my hills.

I'd like to get a seat-belt with each of the ROPS too.

Any modifications to a certified protection device without re-certification should be suspect.

Look up ASME pressure vessel rules.

The thing you have reminds me of a friends Swinger 200 and his Waldo both small articulating loaders fork lift type of machines

Here is a program which is available in NYS. It is administered by the hospital that I received my cancer treatments and cared for me when I had my heart attacks.
I inquired about a ROPS for my 1971 Case 770.

I co owned a pipeline company back in 2000 was talking with a salesman and he said to never buy any machine with an altered ROPS. Because you can never trade that machine in to any dealer and NEVER alter the ROPS(even as small as welding on light brackets on it)of any machine because you take the liability of the ROPS for life. That was heavy equipment dont know if it hold true to farm equipment though.

here are a couple links to look at for a rops for fords.

Someone posted a link a few years back to a BRAND NEW rops cab off a road grader that had been removed and replaced because some idiot drilled holes to mount a CB mic.

I suppose the ROPS on our JD 4600 isn't safe anymore, I put a full canopy on it and drilled some 3/8 holes in it. I was always told if you drill in the center it weakens it less. I love the canopy though, should of done it right away.

i would think so too. anything that can stop or at least slow the tractor down as it rolls can save you.

i built a set (very heavy) for my Case 800. mount pretty well with the fender bolts.

I had to take them off as i need to shorten them a bit to fit in the barn or garage. haven't gotten them back on yet.

What about USED ROPS? that is a ROPS that you "used" because you rolled the tractor. maybe it wasn't "damaged" but should it be replaced too??

there used to be a guy (haven't looked lately) that made ROPS and "reproduction" canopys for older tractors. wonder if he had them "certified"
