The specific model number will be stamped on a flat just above and to the rear of the starter. (although the '62-'64 diesels are often missing those numbers due to leaked battery
acid)
'62-'64 models have 4-cylinder engines, and were available as utility and row crop models. Row crops used drop boxes on the rear axles.
'65 - '75 models used 3-cylinders engines. Also available in utility and row crop configuration, but no drop boxes.

fordfarmer,

You are so right about the model and serial numbers being obliterated. I have an old style, 4 cylinder, diesel, Ford 4000. It is impossible even to guess at what the model and serial numbers might have been, The flat surface where they were stamped is completely "pocked", presumably from battery acid.

If you have the 3 cylinder model 65 up that info is all on stickers under the hood and likly dammaged or missing.

The sticker has the model as D 7024 C. Not sure how the translate to 4000.

Your D70 is Probably D10 which is one of the codes for a 4000. The UNIT number (letter, number, letter, number) is the build date. 1976 would be a 4600 not a 4000. 4600's model #'s start with DA1, DS1, DX1, OR DY1. The "4" is independent PTO and the "C" is 8 x 2 manual transmission.
