Generator to alternator

I'm wanting to take my old not working generator off of my tractor and swap it with a new alternator for a 1995 Dodge Ram. I bought it for the dodge but the tranny went out before I could install it. I know I'll have to get a bracket to fit, but I am wondering how to wire it. There is not a working wiring harness on the tractor. I disconnect the battery after starting. The only wires on it go from positive terminal to a push button start (no key ignition), from push button to starter, ground wire from starter to negative terminal. What should I buy wire wise? It's an internally regulated alternator, 3 wire.

Get you a good old delco 3 wire alternator simple
to wire in. The dodge unit is voltage regulated buy
the ecm

I suspect that alternator is externally regulated.

If there is an alternator/starter shop near you, they could tell you how to wire it to a regulator. Or they may be willing to trade it for a Delco 10SI that is internally regulated, simple to wire, much more available, and very cost efficient.

What kinda tractor? For under 100 bucks
you can buy the complete kit with
alternator, brackets, wiring, ballast
resistor and belt for Ford tractors, I
wouldn't even mess with modify brackets
etc to put a weird alternator on for
that price

If the alternator is not used a shop may swap it for either a Hitachi 14231 (NAPA #2138130) It is smaller in diameter, or a Delco 10SI They wire the same. Diagrams for
IH are here, they are kinda generic ----http://s101.photobucket.com/user/farmallbob/library/Farmall%20Tractor%20Wiring%20Diagrams?sort=4&page=1

Thanks everyone :) I do appreciate it. It's a 1970 ford 5000. We live in very rural area of Oklahoma. Not much in the way of shops in this little town and the biggest town is about an hour away. Ill see if they are willing to trade, maybe so since it's still in the box.

Very easy to wire up the Dodge alternator. Get one of these regulators with the pigtail and wire it as shown.

The image doesn't show the large battery terminal, just the field terminals. Connect the Large BATT. terminal to your amp gauge if you have one or just direct to the BATT. positive.
