1865 - The steamboat Sultana, loaded with over 2,000 Union soldiers, most of whom were very recently prisoners of war at Andersonville and Cahaba prisons, experienced a catastrophic boiler explosion, with resultant fire and eventually sank just north of Memphis, TN. About 1700 were killed, though nobody knows exactly how many, as the loading of the troops in Vicksburg was so poorly documented. The Sultana tragedy was the worst maritime disaster in US history, surpassing the Titanic.
