8N hydraulic leak

Hi.
Can anyone help before I start surgery?
My old 8N has started squirting out it's hydraulic fluid from a gap in the gasket underneath the pump housing whenever I engage the pto. When driving around normally this doesn't happen so it's something to do with pressure. I've tried to bodge it for now, covering the tiny gap with epoxy, but nothing seems to be able to take the strain.

The gasket has blown. There's a passage from the pump up through the body of the tractor, where it matches up to the lift cover, there's a gasket there, as well.

The original gaskets contained asbestos, making them TOUGH.

The politically-correct gaskets sold today are not as tough.

When you replace it, clean surfaces WELL, and don't use sealant, especially silicon, as that makes the gasket slippery and even more prone to blow.

If you are planning to do this, have a service manual at hand and/or ask for details of the job at the "N"-specific Board linked below. The job involves draining the oil, pulling the PTO shaft, and then the pump.

When going back together, the control lever hanging down from the lift mechanism has be engage the control valve in the pump.

You should take this question to the N board a few floors down.
Good folks here and there.
To me sounds like gasket failure that will only get better with proper repair. No bandage fix.
There are a couple other things after removing the cover that could/should be addressed.

While you have the pump and the PTO shaft out, use the opportunity to clean out all the 60+ year
accumulation of sludge in the pump and differential housing. You will be amazed and wonder how the
pump worked at all.
