Cultipacker axle?

I have 38 nice cultipacker wheels and plan to build my own frame and hitch. The wheels have a 1 3/4 hole in them. My question is when I go to the steel yard what kind of steel rod should I ask for? Plan to make it twelve foot with a center bearing. Thanks

You are going to be looking at a bit of money for new shaft tho, if you have a salvage yard nearby I would start there.

The center pole (or solid shaft) from an old side delivery rake might work. I think they were 1 3/4 " and commonly 151" long.

Except they are a pipe and not solid so not strong enough. and an axle would not be that long.

That would be called "1 3/4" 1018 cold rolled".

It will be about 1.748" diameter, just slightly under 1 3/4, with a dull/shiny finish.

The under size is to accommodate fitting inside of an on-size bearing or collar.

I have one that's solid. That's why I thought of it. McCormick Deerings were definitely solid. Part #RC945. "Pole, Center, 151" long, Solid". From the parts catalog. I know of several other brands that had solid center shafts (poles) Minnesota is one. You're probably thinking of the outer poles or maybe an el cheapo model.

See my post above. The part I'm talking about is the center pole and believe me, the one I have is SOLID. And by the way. 12 feet is 144 inches. These SOLID poles are 151 inches long.

I have rebuilt dozens of hay rakes and have yet to find one with a sollid center shaft in them. All I have found in New Idea, McCormick, John Deere, Massey Harris or Case are pipe. So what make or model does have a solid shaft, I would like to know. The rakes I rebuild go to the Amish for use. 4 New Idea 4 bar setting here right now to do this summer. And have parts Deere, IHC and Case here now.

OK what model McCormick Deering as the ones I have worked on were pipe and they liked to rust out so sections needed replaced. The 3 bare rake-tedder is the worst for that.
