Making dump trailer

I am wanting to build a dump trailer using a two ton truck bed and the pto hoist that is on it.
Will a starter motor work to run the hydraulic pump in place of the PTO drive.
If it will work can I connect it with a love joy couple or something similar?
If I were to stop a raising the bed and the valve stays in the lift position:
Will it be able to start under a load. Thanks

I'm going to take a guess here and say it probably will not work with the pump from the truck.

Many dump trailers do use starter motors BUT I think the pumps are much smaller gallons per minute. They are pretty slow but do get the job done.

I doubt a starter motor would have enough umph to run a pump that was originally driven from P.T.O.

Check out ebay for 12v pumps. My factory dump trailer came with a dual acting pump and tank. The hydraulic shop that repairs my cylinders uses one like it to pressure test with. I think he said his goes to 3000 psi.

No, I don't think that will work. Starter motors are designed for intermittent use. The size pump you would need would take a long time to raise the load.

You'll need to do some research. The hardest part will be determining the amount of force the cylinder will need to lift the load. Not just the combined weight of the bed and load, but the geometry of the cylinder must be considered.

If you have the original cylinder and pump and a brand name, the surest way would be to find out the GPM and pressure the system was designed for. If you know the pressure, and the displacement of the cylinder, you can decide what pump you need and what speed you can expect it to lift. Also need to figure the volume of oil to fill the cylinder in order to size the tank.

You may be able to find an electric pump that will work, but it will be slow. Hydraulic components are expensive, you'll want to do this right and do it once, otherwise it can be very frustrating!

Got a rental yard near you ? Scissor lifts and man lifts have electric pumps that operate pretty large cyls. Might go take a look . I think Northern Hyd. sells them too .

Years ago I had a dump bed off a small dump truck that I mounted to a trailer and used a starter motor to work the PTO driver and it did ok. You could not hold the switch for more then maybe a minute at a time but it did in fact dump a load. I welded an old flywheel flex plate to the PTO shaft and used a pillow block bearing to hold the shaft in place and then fixed the starter so it would engage the flywheel when you pushed the starter button

Many a dump trailer was made like that running the pump with a PTO shaft from the tractor. You don't say what you are pulling it with.

I have seen some people power the pump with a 4 cycle engine. May be simplier than buying a battery, switch and using a starter. The batteries on my dump need to be charged all the time from truck or tractor or they won't last very long. The bigger the load the more power it takes from battery.

Ours uses a hydraulic orbit motor to turn the shaft to the pump on the trailer. As long as your pulling with a tractor that has a set of 2 way hydraulics, your good to go.

I have one made out of a 1 ton truck, but the pump is driven by an 8hp Briggs. I can haul a little over three tons of road gravel without spilling much, and it dumps it fine. The pump is chain driven, and it's geared down. It dumps as fast as the truck PTO did, and it starts/stops in the middle of a dump cycle just fine. For using a starter motor, I think you would need to also gear it down somehow. I don't think a starter would drive ours direct with a Lovejoy coupling. I can post pictures of this one if you're interested.

I had a home made dump trailer that had pump mounted on a I think a 3 horse Briggs that would lift 5 tons with no problem and quickly too. Chuck

Just an idea.....
Why not go to a junk yard and find an old box truck with a lift gate? You can get almost everything you need from that in a nice neat package. Even the electrical parts.

I have built 3 dump trailers for use behind tractors. 1 runs off a 12V pump that looks similiar to a starter. It is too slow. The other 2 are dump trucks cut in two and a tongue put in powered by the tractor PTO. These worked much better. Fixing to do another and it will be pto powered. If you run it off the tractor hydraulics, be sure the tractor hydraulics hold a large enough amount of oil not to run it dry whem dumping.
