Another Company Goes To Mexico?

United Technologies "Carrier" the Gas Furnace plant near Indianapolis. 1400 +/- including myself will be out of work beginning in July of 2017, & closed by the end of 2019. Went to work at 5:00pm yesterday, & was given the speech; then sent home for the day with full pay. heading into my 16 years, & wont make it to 20. Production going to Monterrey. If memory serves that's where at least 1 JD factory located. Engine Factory I think.

I'm sorry, I sound like a real jerk. I really hope you can find work as good or better Scotty.

I just find it interesting. When New Process Gear announced they were leaving, the union went on strike also. What's the point?

Feel bad for you. Should be a law that if a company takes their manufacturing operations out of the country, they must leave the trade name at the border. United Technologies should not be allowed to produce "Carrier" equipment outside of the US.

I think union wage demands are part of the reason. But the biggest fault is govt regulations. I know of two places down here that were stopped by regulations. One was a feed plant that was going to expand.Give some more locals a job. But to meet regulations for OSHA and the EPA. It would have added 1-2 million to his cost,so he scrapped the plans

Another was a Bio Gas generation plant. But by the time all the govt inspectors got through. He said to hell with it.

Guess I will be the bad guy here. But I agree. When a company tells it's workers that the company is in trouble. Or leaving. What good is going on strike going to do anyone.

disrupt production and cause losses for the company during the time between the announcement of their plant closing and the foreign plant coming online.

2012 was a VERY critical election cycle. 2016 is even more so ! This hole our country is in will be really hard to get out of but first the government NEEDS to stop digging it deeper. The people need to wake up and see what "hope and change" got us. And we sure do not need to "fell the burn" of socialism.
And don't for a minute think this is not tractor related because now this fellow has lost a good paying job and will be lucky to find anything better than part time 30 hours a week max. at a minimum wage job. You sure can't raise a family on that or have any extra to spend on tractors.

That's a real shame. I guess you could go "breaking bad" and start your own factory. I hear there are a lot of meth addicts in Indiana. :?

Have you been offered a severance package? Maybe you can find a job working with tractors or something you love?

"Milwaukee" drill made in Milwaukee should be called "Milwaukee". "Milwaukee" drills made in China should be called "Chong-Dong-Gong" or whatever.

I'd have a lot of comments and thoughts, but for today sorry to hear you lost your job through no fault of your own.

Hope you can find a silver lining and land on your feet sooner rather than later.

Paul

Realy shut them down rite now they are doing away with your job so shut them down and without any production where is the money and their future if they cant even finish their current product which they have orders to fill.

Chevrolet has more then one manufacturing facility in Mexico. Diesel engines made in Japan an shipped to Mexico. Finished Truck sent to US.

Frank

Great answer Govt regs we have more people stopping progress than ever before then Gov deals allowing companies to move out of this country because of taxes ect it has got to stop with nobody working how is govt going to exist without income. Spent more money last yr on Obomacare than SS just where does govt think the money is going to come from when no good paying jobs exist.

Scotty, I'm really sorry this is happening to you, and many others, and there are other companies as mentioned that are going over there. Well I know I wont buy a Carrier product now, I have added it to my list, sure my decisions will mean nothing to them, but its what I do. Nabisco did it too, I love Graham crackers and a lot of their products, but quit their product line and went to Our Family Foods as they said that their products are mostly made in USA, and if they don't make it here, they put the location it is.
We all try to buy American, guess we need to try harder.

Sorry about the job going away.

All businesses have to be able to make money to stay in business. They either have to build the best product there is that people can afford or have to be priced competitive against products of the same quality. US businesses have been moving operations off shore for over 50 years to either maximize profits or to stay competitive.

Unless a company is employee owned they owe the worker their earned pay and bennies. They own their loyalty to the stock holders. Sure they have happier worked if the show some loyalty but they don't owe the worker loyalty. Just how many of those workers show loyalty to the company or do the sit around a BBQ pit with a beer and their co-workers bad mouthing the company? Loyalty is a 2 way street.

Rick

Not sure if they did as many companies do, and offered a "benefit package" which the employee has to sign stating that if they continue to work until their respective release date they receive pay and benefits for a few weeks/months usually based on seniority. I know where I used to work this was the case, and in some cases the employee found it hard to refuse as it amounted to full pay and health insurance along with retraining benefits for months beyond their release. Of course if you walked, it was gone, and unless you had another job that was comparable, most could not afford to walk, thus they managed to keep the workforce going until they moved the operation. I witnessed hundreds of co-workers train workers that were brought up from Mexico, and train those workers only to walk out with tears in their eyes. Many had 30+ years of seniority.

Yeah, Tim, and if any of the workers have CC permits, they can actually shoot themselves in the foot, just to emphasize their point. Sheesh.

Very sorry to hear of this. Maybe the American people will get their heads out of their ---- this election year and stop this. They had their chance the last election and all we got was more and more welfare.

Go on strike so they just close it faster? Then you can't collect unemployment because officially you are on strike even though your job is already gone.

Sorry your loosing your job. I remember years back I use to pickup and deliver freight out of two United Technologies plants in the northern part of Indiana and they did the same thing.

Sorry to hear of your job loss. I'm retired from John Deere and they have had an engine plant there since the early 80s. They sent some tillage welding down there but ended up bringing it back because of the poor weld quality. I don't know your age but have you thought about going to school to learn a skilled trade.

My company went off shore while it was still very profitable. The bigger problem that isn?t always profitably, but the US tax laws. US companies pay taxes us on foreign made profits and if we want to bring the profit money back to the US to invest in our economy we pay a second US tax. In other words, US companies are taxed twice. A foreign made product sold in a foreign company only pays local taxes on the profit of the sale meaning they can undercut US companies on pricing.
My company has 70 billion dollars in foreign profits sitting in foreign banks. To bring it to the US the feds would take about 35% so we invest it in foreign plants and products. Our lawmakers need to get the message. The US, I have been told, is the only country that double taxes corporations on foreign profits.

GE Corporation moved their airfoil manufacturing to Monterrey around 2000. They totally upgraded the manufacturing facility in New York during one decade and moved in the next. Most of the Mexican machinists that were hired had four year degrees and after a few years the product was better than that created in the US.

If you wonder why it all happened ..... it was called the NAFTA agreement and it screwed the US workers. It is all about flattening the economy across North America...... and the USA is the loser.

But if we keep our "hope and change," can't we all make $15.00 per hour minimum wage while we stare blankly at the grill, flipping hamburgers at the fast food joint?
That's what the liberals, the socialists, the communists, and the rest of the anti American group is promising.

Good luck to you "Deere Scotty.". I pray for America to return to her former glory, for the sake of all of us.

God made man equal. American Exceptionalism (by God's grace) made us better!

Scott

Hi Deere Scotty, Do not despair. A door never closes behind you without one opening in front. Have faith! Ed Will

You can thank the United steel workers and the federal government for the loss of your industry. Most companies are accountable to their stockholders and investors and they can't afford the trinity of insane regulatory costs, ridiculous tax rates and bloated labor hierarchies anymore, there's just not enough money to go around.

So sorry for your loss of employment.

The US is participating in a global economy, but it is not very competitive for large scale companies. Taxes, excessive regulations, risks of litigation and environmental impacts have made it more cost effective to move large-scale operations out of the country. Unless the US makes it cost effective for these companies to remain, more will outsource their operations. Meanwhile, in order to maintain an ever increasing budget and debt, smaller businesses are taxed and regulated to the point of extinction. The writing is on the wall and something needs to change.

Sorry to hear that. My plant closed in 2010, but I retired in 2008, my job was basically gone, and they only had a few people there the last 2 years. Life will get better, I'd suggest getting into something in the medical field. They can't outsource that . Yet.

Deere Scotty- Sorry to hear of your loss. I went through the same thing in 1997. I was moving up the ladder and gaining raises pretty quickly. Making really good wages. After 17 years of work, company HR came in and said Company is sold and workers from other company will be sent in for us to train them how to do our job. We were offered 2 weeks pay for every year of service, unused vacation pay. We were to continue working until we trained our replacements (2 months).

I went to my Doctor and explained the situation and the pressure, anxiety and nervousness I was feeling. He wrote a Doctors note saying that I need not to return to work for 2 months due to the stress I felt.

Got paid for the 2 months off plus received all the severance package.

Now, the bad news, Since that lay-off, I have not found a job to replace my salary. I worked full time without benefits and for 1/3 the pay, Worked minimum wage jobs, spent many weeks looking for another job, the job market has changed a lot since I first entered it in the 1970's.

Good Luck and I wish you the best.

sorry to hear that as well,,, in my hometown oil and coal have been the big employers since the 50 on oil and 70's on coal, over 5000 here have already lost their jobs with another 10,000 with coal real soon,,, hope you are able to fid something
cnt

Sorry to hear about job loss I worked at the Carrier factory for 20 years here in Morrison They closed it up in 2005 and told us that they were doing it for the betterment of Warren county how is putting 1800 people out of work plus another 1000 people that were are suppliers good for the county. The line that I work on made RT units for lowes and other businesses. They said that the line was going to mexico rumor had it that the first 100 unit were shipped and were put on and didn't even work or as we say here DOA.

You can pay them $20.00 an hour but if they only work them 4 hrs a day 2 or 3 days a week they still won't be able to afford to eat where they work as a burger combo will hit 20 bucks heck they are already 10 bucks.

add another company to that Pentair corp already had a small production down in mexico now moving all production to mexico and china. they kept one small original plant in anoka minn.

(quoted from post at 12:19:05 02/11/16) 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel, Its new Duramax turbo-diesel engine is made in Thailand.

Did you note that it is GM's most advanced engine plant?

Donald nnalert says he would change all this. I think he'd be like holding his hands up trying to stop the wind. If the trade laws affected politicians the way it affects little people things would change in a hurry.

I really doubt that. If they changed the trade laws prices would skyrocket and the "little people" blame the politicians. The little people are only concerned with the price of a new TV.

That's rough losing a job like that. Sad part is your not alone. An example; My sister, brother and wife have ALL lost their jobs in the past 18 months. external_link-care/health care costs played a big part in the loss of their jobs.

While they have all found jobs they are not making the money they were before.

Its more than just the wages paid that's driving jobs outside the USA. Its taxes regulations and more. Plus people need to realize the Global trade agreements and how they are structured.

Plus it seems the USA is about to collapse and a lot of companies are jumping the good ship USA and heading to safer locations.

Sorry to hear that. UTC Sikorsky had a plant near here that they bought expanded and leased up spaces just to close it down one day. Good friend worked there. Also they moved some of the aircraft manufacturing to poland instead of Stratford. Can't really blame them. Unions have really hurt the bottom line. From what I have been told aircraft built there are more uniform with less mistakes. Workers collectively here need to take better pride in there work instead of paycheck and more companies might stay despite the higher labor cost.

The only thing it can do is, possibly, arouse the public and garner sympathy for the workers which should lead to a boycott of Carrier (after all, it's about the $money$,
so sympathy for Carrier management should be 'little or none') The company exhibits NO loyalty to it's employees so any public loyalty to the brand would be misplaced.

Carrier's been doing stuff in Mexico for years, the county re-habbed and built a few buildings just before and during my time with them. All the Carrier air handlers and I think the LEC chillers came out of Mexico. Another factor for businesses going off shore is the incumbent President's global warming/climate change policies. How many coal fired electric plants do Barry and the Boyz want to close before he leaves office? I heard Michigan was going to loose 5, that will leave a lot of peak days here industry can't afford to run

The only time I ever saw a strike in that situation, it was to try to get better severance bennies. You can't stop it.

WHAT! There's no problem here!! Just ask Bernie, tax the rich and give to the poor. It will be known as the Soviet Socialist Republic of the USA. We'll all be rich. And we can have Hitlery as our VP. Wonderful!

Rawstory has a video of the announcement of the closure of the Plant in Indy. After listening to the comments by the companies mouth piece I believe its about breaking the Union.
