Will not start. Wants to backfire when trying to start. It was running good one day, next day started this. Checked valves and spark plug. Also key and keyway on flywheel. Still no go just backfire like a high caliber rifle. This is not my primary mower but it has gotten personal. Any ideas? Tia.

Does that have the solenoid float bowl? Those dumb things go bad and won't let any fuel to the main jet. K PoW! Lean backfire.

Did you replace the plug? Even though it may look good, try a new one. I fought a Kawasaki mower that was doing strange things, $100 worth of parts later I replaced the "good looking" plug. Fixed it!

I am with Steve on this one -- I have one in a JD176 --wouldnt start -- new plug and good to go -- good luck

Steve and Roy: new plug but will put another one in. Had bad out of the box before. This mower is kicking my rear. Have fixed 2 generators and 1 troy built tiller that have sat for 12-15 years this week with no problems. This is tiring. Will post back tomorrow. Thanks guys. Will also check the solenoid on the float bowl.

You don't say which engine it is or what its on. I know. It says 'series K' on the top which tells me nothing. Look at the model/serial tag.
If its the single cylinder, FB or FC series, Have you tried a new trigger? The little metal box on the side of the cylinder can do all sorts of strange stuff.

ArleninOr,
Does it have a spark? I remove spark plug, rest it against engine and spin engine.

I've seen flywheels rust. Rust comes in contact with ign coil and no spark.

George, yes it has spark. Was mowing and quit for the night. Went to start next day and all it would do is backfire. Will but another new plug today and try that. Thanks

I know you said you checked the valves but a friend of mine had the same problem with a small engine. When this thing B/F you could hear it a mile away. Finally found a broken valve spring.
