water well pipe

Trying to clean out an old hand dug water well. No telling how old it is, as I don't know the history of the place beyond about 40 years. Fished a piece of pipe out, about 6", appears to be made of cement. Anybody recognize this type of pipe, any idea how old it might be or when it was popular to use?

Cement pipe was common only about 50-60 years ago. It was used for sewer lines and lateral lines. It would last forever, but every joint was an open invitation for roots. It was replaced with PVC once that was developed.

You still cement used for culverts, irrigation, etc.

Some of the manufacturers of concrete pipe and tile used asbestos in it to strengthen the structure (transite is one brand of that). I would Dispose of it and flush before using the water for animals. Jim

You could run a 4 inch PVC down inside it, but there might still be some asbestos contamination, if there is any. If there is asbestos in the concrete I would think it would be obvious to someone who is experienced in that field. The paper mill that I worked in had lot's of asbestos, it was a great material! We were told as long as we didn't cut, drill, or break it to create dust it wasn't a hazard.

Transite. Used extensively 50 yrs ago for municipal water systems. EPA now requiring extra expensive tests for asbestos erosion into potable water systems.
