i was reading a old magazine, in the "whats this" column there was something interesting, seems this person bought a place which was formerly part of a farm, last farmed in the late 50's or early 60's they thought, the item was broken off but what was there consisted of a solid piece of really heavy wire, on its lower end it was shaped into a screw, like it was meant to be screwed into the ground, and apparently had been at one time by the corrosion on it,the rest of it consisted of 4 evenly placed loops, made by simply looping the wire over itself, then it was broken off, to me i think im looking at a wire fence stay, but ive never seen one that screwed into the ground, it may be for a ground wire, but that doesn't explain the 4 evenly placed loops the loops look like the spacing on a modern wire fence, any ideas?

We used to have some things like that. You would screw them in to the ground next to a lawn chair as a beverage holder.

Was it wire or small rod. What you described reminds me of the old screw in hitching posts. A corkscrew end was turned into the ground and 3 or 4 pig tail
loops allowed horses to be tied off.

Here is a picture of the item.

A junk man who goes to the local flea market sells those - lots of them. He told me they were originally light duty metal fence posts, meant for temporary use only. People here weld them into yard art or make take three and make a tripod to hang things over camp fires.
