John Deere model L 22 inch rear wheels

About a week ago I asked about 22.5 tires on the rear of an L JD. We have confirmed these tires are mounted on 22 inch rear rims. I am helping the Widow of my Friend sell this tractor. My Friend had a buyer before he died but had not closed the deal. Since his death the buyer has found several cracks in the block and has reduced his offer. He has offered a price for the tractor, which is in poor condition, and all parts my Friend had collected for it. We have agreed to his offer with the exception that the two extra rear wheels are not included. I am thinking these wheels have a good value on their own. I am looking for opinions of what they are worth. I would appreciate any opinions you all can give. The wheels are in good condition.

If the wheels are original JD they would be worth something if not rusted ect what kind of hubs ect how wide ect

This might well be a difficult time for a widow to have to deal with all the details you mention. If you have a buyer and the price is close enough for both parties then I suggest you sell it. I have a feeling that the wheels should not be a deal breaker. You said the tractor is in poor condition so if this buyer backs out there is a risk you might not get another buyer...adding to the problems of a widow. When buyer arrives to get tractor, count the cash before he loads it up...I have sold tractors and plows and have purchased tractors and plows and the cash is counted first; handing the cash to the widow should make her very happy.

You have to be careful. There were several styles of L'S-- started out with the model Y, then 62. The early ones were made out of Model A parts as this was the depression and little or no money was around . styled and unstyled, up to s/n 639,999, JD used the Hercules engine, The NXB. After 640,000 JD had their own engine with electric start and generator. If you have the serial number that's a very big plus and it will tell you about when it was made. Parts are around, Ridenhauers(they specialize in only JD L's) in Ohio and James MacFaddens in Sharon Springs in NY. In the past I have gotten many parts from MacFaddens. Rims for the "L" used to be available from Gemplers. If you intend on keeping it the "WICO Model X" magneto is the best.(this was an acceptable upgrade from earlier mags) The Model "C" is an Ok mag and JD's first was the Dixie-Splitdorf. As to price it varies all over the country. I have a 1940 Model, one of the last with the Hercules engine. I've been offered something over $3000 here in VT, but its not for sale-- way too much time and money in it to think about selling. Everybody wants to buy cheap and sell very high.

With out some picture or further information it is hard (yes some pieces can be worth a lot) others price of scrap. I like what LA in WI said. When I sell this stuff and in this situation I sell it all as one guess you win some and lose some. Also the wheels would be hard to ship say compared to a carburetor, if you try online sales.

These wheels are original JD 22 inch rear wheels for an L. They are in excellent condition externally but don't know what they look like under the tire. This is an L with the Hercules engine. The engine has 4 cracks in the block but the buyer had already paid for the extra engine my Friend had for it. We have agreed to let it go for $500.00 which includes the tractor, an extra mag, extra governor, seat bracket, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and several other parts. All these parts are used. Since the LA had 24 inch rims mounted on a center with clamps I am thinking these wheels could be very desirable to someone. These are one piece like big truck wheels with rim riveted to the center. I found a couple places advertising LA rims only for $265.00. I am thinking these should bring $100.00 each with no problem. The buyer wants them so we are trying to determine a fair price for them.

The buyer is a good friend and we are all past Officers and present Directors of our Antique tractor club. He is known to be very thrifty in his purchases and we just want to make sure the widow gets a fair price.

Thanks for the replys and I look forward to more.
