Is Facebook taking people away?

I'll admit it's been a while since I've been on YT site. I've been busy and just haven't been working on any projects. The last couple weeks I have been checking out the site often. It didn't take long to notice there is not as much activity like there used to be in the forums and also the classifieds. Could it be with all the tractor groups on Facebook now? What are your thoughts?

IMHO, Facebook is nothing more than a gossip site. Teenage girls post pictures of their homes, their pets, their families, and then wonder where the predators come from. Then there are the narcissists that post what they had for breakfast and what their mood is for the world to see. As if anybody cares......
I was not aware that they even had forums. However, one thing you may count on: you will NEVER find me there. Period.
This is still the best tractor forum there is. Also one of the most active and informative ones.

I'm with the others. I'd much rather read these forums than see where somebody went, what they ate, what the want, or "I saw a cow in the road on the way home last night!".

Rumor has it that a group of guys from Tractor Tales got fed up with a guy (who never posts anymore) and took their group and went to FB. Of course Tales has since gone back to being fairly normal other than those fellas being missing. Honestly, the most interesting of the old crowd are still there IMHO. I think what you are seeing is normal February slow down here. A lot of guys are not doing as much and don't have as much to talk about maybe? I dunno...

I have a Facebook account but don't even
use my full name. I only have tractor or
car related stuff. I don't care to
interact with people.
Yes there are tons of tractor groups.
Some are just narrowed down to a
particular make and model. If you have
question you'll gelt answers in less then
a minute. It's a lot easier to post
pictures. There are also classified
pages on Facebook that is hard to even
keep up with there are so many posts.
Another perk is so many tractor and
engine shows post advertisements of up
coming shows. Then they'll even post
videos and pictures as the shows are
going on.
I hate to say it but Facebook or any
other social media is putting a hurting
on many things.

Y'all don't be so harsh on Facebook, good does come out of it occasionally. The Affluenza Teen is now facing justice he should have got origionally, thanks to Facebook. Someone posted a beer pong party on facebook. Guess who the police saw there breaking probation?

There does seem to be less activity here... I was thinking farm economy had something to do with it. Many, if not most on here make a living in ag, and less margin means less $ to spend old tractors and such.

It appears there is less activity at the local implement dealers, too!

I just touched my mouse and several keys to make this entry. Hope I'm not turning this into an attempt at Facebook. LOL Sorry Folks.

Tractor item: Do any of you tractor folks like the Old Style Firestone 3 rib front tractor tires? They are my favorite, but I wish they were not so expensive. I'm thinking about getting a pair for my John Deere 50.

Somebody was whining last week about all the non tractor posts. Seems like things dropped off by half after that. It'll come back. Until he whines again.

"Facebook or any
other social media is putting a hurting
on many things."

Unfortunately, the main thing it's putting a hurt on is society in general.

Shoot I spend far more time here. Facebook means wastebook to me nothing important or interesting discussed there(whining, pictures that mean nothing, "I did this..(too often).", swearing). Sure they have a few tractor pages, but those still ain't as interesting as this group. Since I really got into it, I log in here more then once a day(sometimes killing hours lurking, rechecking posts and searching for tips/help). I log into FB once in a while to make sure no one wanted(or tagged??) me for anything.

As for slow, might be winter blahs getting to em. To cold to use tractor, to cold to work in non-heated shop, Machines froze in where they can't get to them(goes for selling as well). Dark to soon to get decent pictures.

I signed up on Facebook because I had a few guys working for me that were addicted to it. Just so I could keep up with what they posted on my time I got in the game, It cost one $600 I deducted from his pay over a 90 day period. I caught him red handed several times typing away on his cell phone he was addicted bad real bad....

I could keep up with my grand kids till my son divorced, his X she was a Facebook addict. I got away from Facebook because it slowed down my puter with all the adds/add on's,,, now I find when I check in occasionally I don't get all the BS adds I use to get when I played there...

Facebook is not all bad but it has enough bad I don't go there much...

I do not think Facebook is hurting this site/forum. I think it is more the normal winter blaaaaas . LOL The weather is not good and people are getting tired of cold, snow and just things in general.

I have noticed that this site is like many other social things/places, people come and go. They may go for good or they maybe back.

It is a good site that has made me friends I would have never known if not for this site.

There is plenty of activity on Facebook though. Pictures of engines being rebuilt, painting, working out in the snow etc..

brutus49dc : What is a "REAL" tractor puller?????? Is that the fellow that will spend thousands of dollars to "win" a fifty dollar first place????

LOL Pulling tractors is kind of like playing the lotto. Lots of money changing hands but few winners.

I don't facebook, my space or any of that other stuff. Never have and not interested in starting. At YT, on a computer that is either lap top or tower, I can sit down when I have time. Works just perfect. For the folks with androids or iphones or ipads or the sort that walk around like mindless zombies staring into their fingers sliding from side to side, corner to corner all day or night long as they walk face first into walls or vehicle traffic, good for them. A year or so ago I was in the tire store getting new shoes for one of my pickups. There were ten of us in the waiting area, and only two of us were not droiding, and two of the eight that were droiding feverishly and mindlessly were a father and his teenaged daughter that were sitting next to each other as though neither existed as they droided. I chuckled as I flipped my tongue, waved, jumped up and down, and not one noticed. I'm not interested in being that mindlessly dumbed down where I need something to tell me when to breath or how to comb my hair whatever style. To each, his or her own.

I figured when I asked this question we would see lot of negative Facebook comments and rightfully so. There are many negative things about it.
I've seen that a lot did not know there are tractor related things on Facebook. Like I said below I personality use Facebook only for tractor stuff. I have no drama or bashing of anytime to deal with. You have complete control of what you see. To be fair there is more off topic conversations on here.
Many people are saying it's a slow time of the season, condition of the economy, etc. However if you go over to the "Dark Side" there is so much tractor activity it will make your head spin. I have heard people comment that they don't go over to other forums anymore just because nothing is going on... So after some thought Id have to say that yes Facebook tractor activity has taken people away. I will continue to use this site because it is a great tool and have been on here for many MANY years!!
I guess my question was a dumb one for those who don't do Facebook. LOL I should post it on a Facebook page to see if individuals will admit from leaving web forums due to Facebook.

My daughter talked me in to trying FB but not for very long as it's not for me. I can't understand why one would want to reveal to the World most everything that's happening in ones life. The one that really gets me is revealing to the World on where one will be tonight or in the near future such as vacations.

I'm just wondering how many of you realize how much you sound like the anti-computer guys of 20 years ago?

"Don't need no stinkin coumputer, and there'll never be one in my house." "Devil's tool!"

Facebook seems to have become the most bashed site by non users. I personally find it great. It's like shopping at a well stocked tool store. You can pick and choose what you want and leave the rest on the shelf.

Don't want to see what xxxx ate for breakfast? Don't follow xxxx and you'll never know he exists. Nobody just pops in and posts repulsive stuff on your page unless you invite/allow them in. You don't see what jerks are posting unless you have reached an agreement to admit that person. You don't get exposed to repulsive JD posts in a group unless you choose to join that group.

If you don't like some of the restrictions Miss Kim puts on the YT boards, don't gripe about it every time it gets removed. Start a facebook group, invite your friends to join and post 'til your heart's content.

Kind of like ordering spinach at a restaurant. You do it once and don't like it, you learned something. Order it a second time and there's no one to blame but yourself.

I find it funny that those who do not do fb always put it down, it is what you want it to be, easy to set security to what you want, don't like drama,, easy loose those who do it,, I have done over 10,000 posts here,,, I know there are some who have done many more,, its all good,,, I have a CASE fb page,,, over 7600 members, it has more posts in one day than I see here in weeks, I Really like both sites myself and I am NOT trying to get new members from here just telling how it is,,, I have met a lot of great people on both places, I will say my fb one I have got friends all over the world from it,, really good people just like here. One thing here I do not like is the attitude some have,,, Hey we all do things different that is what makes the world work. I will always visit YT, this site is GREAT the admins work Hard to keep it going and they have a descent source of items for sale. I do want tot hank those who comment here who make me Smile,,, and a Lot of you do that thanks again

oh and by the way YT HAS a fb page too
cnt

Randy, I agree with you totally. I tried it for about a year and gave it up in disgust about 2 years ago.

I forgot about the YT page, they pull a lot from the forums to post, then direct people back here for "the whole story".

I do fb and here and like both for different reasons. I keep in touch with my kids and grandkids on fb and am linked to 3 tractor pages and a trucking page and a welding page. I'm using all of them less these days because I'm not doing much right now. Things will pic up in the summer I'm sure.

I got on FB to keep up with my Kids. I've since been contacted by several people that I haven't heard from in 40 years. FB has security that you can set and if you don't want it out then don't put it on there, As far as drama, I see a lot of that on YT also. I just pass it by and go on.
I get regular weather updates from FB and a couple of organizations that I'm affiliated with uses it to organize events. There's good and bad will all internet media. You usually get out of it what you put into it.

I have a Facebook account, but use it very minimally.

At an orientation session when I was first sworn in to public office, an official of the Nebraska Association of County Officials strongly recommended against involvement in Facebook or other social media. They're too much of a minefield for someone in the public eye. I took him at his word.

Yes, for sure I spend more time on the various facebook special interest groups than I do here. There is so much valuable information and contacts to be made there. Been there for years and its been all good. Even started my own local history page and its been a great way to share history and old photos with people that share that same interest. Not much different than this forum I'd say.
I don't waste my working time on it or anything else social media oriented. (No smart phone!) Its something I do in my spare time. And I have a lot of that in winter.

You don't have to be on it to have your life ruined by it. All it takes is a couple of sisters in law running off at the mouth and dragging people through the dirt to tear a family apart.

rrlund I completely agree, social media is messing up America. I don't do any of it. The only time I have ever tweeted is from the bathroom and I try to have the window open.

I don't want to say its stealing everyone away but I am sure it has an influence. For a younger portion of the viewing audience, it is easier to post pictures, ask quick questions, start a topic in the Facebook groups because of the phone app. I am rarely on a physical computer when reviewing anything on social media. Through joining all of the tractor groups, I have flushed all the nonsense away from my viewing and replaced it with tractors and old gas engines.

Now, in a counterpoint, I come to YT when I need to look up archives or ask "serious" questions. I just spent a week (not all day) reviewing posts from 2008-2010. What a history lesson from those old threads. That search showed to me how there has been a shift in post quantity and topics of conversation over the last few years.

You got that right rrlund. The young people I work with take a break and all have their faces stuck in a cell phone for the entire break and entire lunchtime. There will be two 50 year olds actually having a conversation about life and the other 10 people stare blankly at a cell phone for 10 minutes or get sucked down into the Youtube video black hole universe sitting there watching stupid video after stupid video over and over etc. I remember 20 people taking a break and being social but not anymore. Really strange times. I don't even see anybody outside around here anymore. Either in cars riding around looking at phones or in the house staring at a phone.

rrlund, you do know it's not Facebook that's tearing your family apart, but your sister in laws right?

Yeah, I knew ya did, but hadda throw it out there.

I've been on here for about 15 years... and on Facebook since it became public. I don't think either one has any effect on the other. FB tends to be more for closer friends and contacts while this is a much more general forum where folk who don't know each other talk tractors or whatever else comes up.
Traffic volume here is and has always been cylical and perhaps right now is a bit low on some forums. I dunno... I find it about average myself.

i think a lot of what going on is because of the economy and farm prices also our pres is a lame duck, was from the start

Yup,I do,but Dad always used to tell us,"Don't put it in writing". If it was just gossip between two people,it got ignored for the most part, but when it's written down for the whole world to see,and others to comment on,it just snowballs until everybody gets dragged in to it. I've had the same conversation with my best friend since we were four years old. With him,it's daughters in law and his wife. Somebody says something online, somebody else takes it out of context or feels left out, next thing you know, nobody's speaking to anybody else.

The first rule of survival when dealing with a certified looney is to ignore them. Don't make eye contact.

...and no sudden movements!

Yes... and 40 years ago the two wicked sisters would be yapping to anyone and everyone on the party line. It was no more facebooks fault today than it was that of copper wire 40 years ago...
If you live in a small town, gossip gets around. If you live in a big city... NOBODY cares....

Rod

In those days it would have been the two gossips on the party line who would have been shunned. Social media gives too many people the chance to read comments, take them out of context then make their own comments, and all of it put in writing where nobody can deny saying it and sweep it under the rug like it didn't happen.
From time to time when this subject comes up,I think I'm reading comments from a few folks who bought stock in FB when shares were offered for public sale, the way they defend it.

Must be different where you are because the gossips here are no different now than they were then. They talk about anyone and everyone and most of the lies here still spread by word of mouth. Facebook is just one more tool in their bag.. I could care less about any of them because what they say about me makes more difference to them than me...

I expect if people are leaving here it is because of the two systems that this site prefers to run and the incompatibility of these two systems to operate together smoothly yet the powers that be will not rectify it.

This might cause people to leave maybe, don't you think?

It is a mess, why can't posters see that.

There is an off topic forum "Tractor Tales" that Tractor Talk and Tool Talk posters won't use for their off topic posts.

This is a totally disfuntional site....it's a mess.

Not sure if it's causing people to leave or not, but your observations about the two different formats are right on. But, as you say, the powers that be seem to be OK with that, for whatever reason.
They could also enforce the "off topic" part, but apparently choose not to.
So I guess we deal with what is, even though it makes no sense sometimes.
