live PTO questions

There is a tractor for sale which has a "live" (two stage clutch) PTO. I have tractors with independent PTO's and have driven tractors with transmission driven PTO's (older Fords). Never used a tractor with the two stage clutch. I understand about pushing the clutch pedal down half way to stop the tractor and leave the PTO running and with the pedal down stopping both tractor and PTO.
Now my questions: With the live PTO, when you put the tractor's transmission in reverse, does that also reverse the rotation of the PTO shaft? To be safe with a rotary mower, would you need to use an over running coupler like on the old transmission driven PTO?

No, the PTO spins the same direction regardless of the direction the tractor is traveling. I don't think you will need an over running coupler when using a rotary mower on a tractor with a live or independent PTO. The reason it is needed on a tractor with a transmission driven PTO is that even when you step on the clutch to stop the tractor, the flywheel effect of the mower will drive the tractor forward through the PTO and transmission.

except I think ferguson had that ground speed option on the pto lever that actually reversed with the axle,,

Correct Massey with live and ground driven Pto will reverse when in ground driven in reverse. works wonders when pluggin up bailer or sticking post hole digger in ground like a screw LOL

It is a IH 444. Years ago I had a 300 Farmall and it had an independent PTO. This 444 is newer, but the ad said it had a live PTO. I want to use it for mowing so wanted a better idea about the live PTO works before talking to the seller.

My Massey Harris 50 has ground drive option on PTO. When in ground drive it will rotate PTO with the wheels.

Hi, if it is an IH 444 it has a dual stage clutch and PTO always turns the same direction. There were a few of the 3444 industrial models that were made without dual stage clutch and no PTO. The only tractor that would reverse the PTO was the MF ground drive option. Of course you can have an older tractor turn the PTO backwards by press in the clutch with the tractor in a forward gear and letting the tractor roll backward. Same can occur by rolling forward with trans in Rev.

I never had to jack a wheel ...most times in the root wads and rocks we delt with on our place with the neighbors ferguson 65 diesel , we would simply backup and waller the hole , usually a eighth turn was all it took to release the bugger,,. we liked the massey for drilling postholes simply for that option,..
