I know I am not the only one who has not figured how to remove the water pump fan nut. Just about every thing I read calls for a special wrench. I don't have that special wrench. Someone give me some simple instructions on removing this nut. Standing at the front of the truck, does the nut turn to the right? This will help for starters. I have the a wrench to fit the nut. Thanks for any help. Stan

Just having taken one off within the last week, I can assure you that it is a standard right hand thread. As you stand in front of the vehicle, clockwise (to the right) tightens it, counterclockwise (to the left) loosens it. They are usually on there pretty tight. I used a big wrench and kept hitting it to the left with my hammer until it came loose. Don't take the belt off until you get it loose or you will have to have something to hold the pulley still.

gas or diesel mine is left handed on the diesel I bought a set of thin wrenches from harbor frirght the nut in mine is 36 mm then I hold the pulley with a set of filter pliers and snack the wrench with a hammer to break the nut free and it comes off

Had the same problem on a 1990 ford ranger.Used a 36" pipe wrench to hold the pulley from turning, then hit the other wrench with a hammer to break the nut loose.Smaller pipe wrench would have worked but it was what I had at the time.

i usually get away with sliding a screw driver up around the pulley bolts to hold it, then give a quick smack on the wrench, helps to leave the belt on.

You don't take the fan off to remove the water pump on a cummins.

To loosen it, turn the nut the same direction the fan turns.

I've used a long drift, or just a piece of 1/2" or so steel rod, hit the edge of the hex in the direction the fan turns with the belt still on.

air chisel on one of the corners of the nut spins them right off, will mark up the nut a little. Bill

Ditto what Steve@Advance said, use a long punch or drift. The only reason you should ever have to remove the fan is if the fan bearing went bad. Had to do the entire thing on my son's 06 Dodge Cummins. All of the idlers, the harmonic balancer and the air conditioning compressor had to be replaced. We made a spanner for that went over the smaller fan bolts, bought an combination wrench, but the punch was what did it. They even make a special tool for an air hammer for this very job. Don't want one and I hope to never do this again...

OK i even had problems getting my fan off my truck , even with all the tools i have i do not had the fan hub wrench . sooooo i cheated i used my 24 inch pipe wrench tied to a hole in the fender with a piece of 3/8th nylon rope to hold it while it held onto the pulley behind the belt groves then with my LONG 1 7/16ths with my long 1 1/2 inch wrench MUFFLER CLAMPED to the 1 7/16 and all i had to put on this it came loose , But for the life of me setting here i do not remember if it was a right hand thread or a left . Sorry on that OLD age. I was talking with Dodge mechanic that works on them every day and he told me that yea they can be a bit stubborn and showed me his fan removal tool . He told me he fought one for two days before he bought the tool . It is a wrench set up that hooks to a air hammer , And i have got to have one . Yea it is not cheap but neither is my time . OK so it is 178 bucks for the tool to me well worth it in terms of keeping my blood pressure down and neighbors ears from burning.

Ok , don't know nothing about a V 10 , only looked at one in a Viper once . But if it is anything like a 360 just study how the fan blades pull in the air and turn the other way ..Now on our Durango with the 360 /5.9 i made up a wooden wedge and drive it in between the two pulleys and with a 1 7/16th wrench and a dead blow hammer it will come off after the correct words are used long enough. I made the wedge out of Oak and made small saw marks across it so it would grip the belt better . May work for ya may not work for ya , there is always the LESLIE fan tool for the Impact hammer . Cheap at twice the price if nothing else works. will have one just as soon as i get MY MONEY back from the Gov . before the spend or loose it .
