A few years ago I needed a new 5 gallon gas can. I ended up with one of those awful EPA approved non vented gas cans, you know the ones that take two hands to handle (that could be an ADA law suit waiting to happen) and leak fuel all over the place? The ones with the little hook n the side of the spout you hook on the fuel tank to push the collar over the spout back opening up the nozzle to let gas out? Well the other day the darn thing was leaking more than usual and I get to checking it out, seems the stupid plastic ring that goes around the spout cracked, probably from all the weight on the end of the nozzle needed to keep the stupid nozzle open. I go to buy a replacement nozzle, seems you can buy regular cans again AND the diameter and threads on the ECO safe gas can are different than the regular ones so you can't ruin the environment by putting an old style nozzle on it and they don't sell a new replacement nozzle ECO safe pre-leaking nozzles. SO I have a gas can less than 3 years old heading to the landfill after dumping about 50 gallons of gas on the ground in the course of it's life-but hey we saved the environment so it's okay.

I sure wish they'd bring back the STEEL GI style Jerry Cans with the STEEL flex-spout; I'm tired of all this plastic crap.

I watch auctions. Sometimes you can pick up the old style cans for a few bucks.

(quoted from post at 15:29:35 02/02/16) They can be found on Ebay but they're pricey for used cans.

I just bit the bullet and bought a steel Eagle brand can on Amazon. A lot easier to use than the CARB cans. Justrite brand makes them too.

I look for the 2-1/2 gallon gum drop looking round top/flat bottom Eagle gas cans - at yard sales.

Found a couple over the years. IMHO - none are better.

The old steel 5 gallon oil cans used to make great case cans. Now they are considered collectable. You can buy the gerry cans at Farm and fleet. If you don't have a store near you, you can purchase them online. I just bought three of those steel safety cans from a seller on eBay. One with a nozzle for the lawn mower and two of the other style for putting gas in my tractor.

mine are bad too when i pour i use a big metal funnel and pour right out the top of the can, no spout at all its not perfect, but better than their cap and spout

I have a good Old Ironsides can. I wish I could find a new cap for it. Wife bought one of those 5 gal. plastic things with top and side handles. Slide the lock button and push the lever down. If you hold it with your thumb that hand is the wrong way to lift and pour. Add to that the black wrap-around tanks most mowers have and you can't tell when it's full till it overflows.

Yard/garage sales. I must have 20 or more old steel gas cans -- Eagle and others -- so many I've stopped buying them unless they're almost free. As it is, I never pay more than a dollar for them. But I go to a lot of yard sales.

I go and cruse the flea market. About every two or three weeks I find a good metal Eagle can. The ones with the explosion proof screens in them and those spiffy spring loaded caps. I find from one gallon to five gallon sizes. They can go from 2 or 3 bucks to ten or fifteen. Just check them over really good to make sure they don't have rust holes or such. Most likely I have around thirty of them in all sizes. Couple up at my folks. Some more over at my sisters. I also have a whord of hi-test gas for my generator if needed. Flea markets are a great place to look around!

I second the Eagle can, I bought the type II. Works great, pours fast, and when you want it to.

I just pull all that spring-loaded cr^p off of the spout, then use a screw to vent the thing. Works MUCH better. or just use a funnel....

In CA (Crazy America) the CHP will ticket you if they find you have a vented or non CARB can in your vehicle. I used to put diesel in a 50 gallon drum but no longer dream of moving fuel like that.

You can get non EPA spouts at many locations. Menards has them. Kit also has the vent you can add like the old style plastic cans.

I just use a siphon pump like they sell for filling kerosene heaters. Doesn't matter what kind of cap they dream up, it comes off.

Kinda on the subject. My neighbor has a quick coupler that fits the Schrader valve on his pickup fuel rail.(got it at parts store). Has about 15 ft of 3/8 hose, with a shut off valve. Can fill a lawn mower or old tractor in a flash. It would have 50 psi.

Is the Eagle brand the style that John Deere re-brands and sells? I have a 2 1/2 gallon size labeled JD that I think is the Eagle brand.

actually I recently realized you can still buy decent gas cans - in blue, but if you keep things labled, or even just spray paint them red if you're ambitious it shouldn't matter.

Somebody might give you grief at a gas station filling it up, but - it's better than fighting the new cans.
water can

I recently bought a couple of new cans as the ones with screw on lids that have been here forever were getting in bad shape. These are justrite brand. They work good for pouring into a fuel funnel set in the tractor's tank. I got the Type I can without the flex nozzle.
Fuel cans

I put all my fuel in jeep cans. I seam to have a lot of them, I have picked up over the years at swap meets Problem is finding a good rubber seal. Stan

I have looked at new gas cans and will stick with my old Chilton plastic cans with vents for long as I can.

Right or wrong, this is what I use. Been using them for over 15 years. I took one of the caps which has a female 1" npt threads and knocked out the plug and installed a 1" hose nipple. On that I installed a foot of clear 1" hose. I can fill a tractor with 5 gallon is gas in about 30 seconds. Best of all, they don't drip a drop. You can paint them red if wanted.

I like those too. There was a post sometime last fall about these and some negative comments about the results of vapor and expansion when you pop open the top on the type I when used for gasoline (eagle is the brand I have)followed by you wearing the liquid and it making a mess. Older vented plastic cans will do the same, keep them in the shade and as cool as possible. With the type 1 (and it says right on the can) open slowly! Well duh.... and you can gently open that top, its spring loaded and it closes very quickly just the same. The eagle has the removable funnel, which you can clean easily, mine don't seem to attract too much dust/dirt, just the same you can flush and dry them off easily and these work so much better than the new plastic safety cans with those poorly designed ventilate spout/nozzle. Well in my opinion anyways. I'm sort of stuck with fuel cans as I don't use enough to warrant storing more than 10-15 gallons at a time, I may try a small fuel caddy for diesel eventually, but not for gasoline.
Eagle Type 1 Safety Can

Went to TSC once and bought a blue can for kerosene. Just for kicks told the cashier I was going to put gas in it. She was going to call the police.

These guys have solved that problem for me:

They fit most of my old cans. I've also used some vents such as these to repair older cans:

I second that. I usually take the whole spout off and use a funnel. However, this past weekend, I had to put some gas in my truck and had a few minutes so I decided to try (once again) to use the darn spout on a new can. The stupid green ring has a locked and unlocked padlock symbol but I couldn't get it to pour in either position (wasn't sure which way was "open", since the symbol location made it unclear which was which). It has the hook and I couldn't push the spout down by hand, so what luck do you suppose I'd have with a full gas can balancing on that little hooky thing in the tank opening? I tried anyway a couple of times and finally the spout broke, spilling a bunch of gas on the ground (and my boots). So this can will end up with a modified cap and screw in a drilled hole for a vent just like the others.

4x for the Eagle with the F-15 nozzle. When I decided that we needed a generator, I couldn't see leaving my wife to hold one of those new venting plastic ones for twenty minutes while the gas dribbles out so I got a second eagle and an extra nozzle. My original Eagle is forty years old. A fraction of the cost per year of the new plastic type.

Not so much anymore, at least around me. Seems everyone is looking for the older cans and have been bidding them up.
