Looking at buying a used Toyota Tundra. What kind of highway fuel economy are you guys getting from yours?
 
Depends on how old the Tundra is and what engine it has. Ours is a 2003 and has the 4.7 liter V8 engine. Mileage will vary. I usually get 17-18 around town. Highway travel at 65 and it will get 20 mpg. We took it on a few trips driving 75 on the interstate and got as high as 22.5 mpg. It doesn't like gasohol and mileage will drop to 15-17 mpg.

Check what engine is in the unit. 4.7 is a good engine; it's actually a Lexus engine. Early models had timing belt that has to be changed every 90,000 miles; if that belt ever brakes it will tear up the engine as it is an interference engine. Toyota has changed their engines over to timing chains one-by-one, but don't trust a salesman to tell you the truth - talk to someone who knows or can look it up.

I don't drive it much now as we mostly drive the Camry around the city. Wife will sell it after I am gone, but I just like to drive it sometimes.
 
I have a 2011 Tundra Limited Crew Max with a 5.7L Flex Fuel engine that I purchased new in Dec of 2010. I just rolled over 300000 miles on Saturday. 17.5-18.5 highway MPG on regular unleaded since new. Better mileage in summer than winter. Driving I do is between my farm in east central Wisconsin and upstate New York and everywhere in between. No towing but occasionally pick up loads of up to a ton. Use Michelin tires exclusively. X-Ice in winter, ?? in summer. 20" wheels. 0W20 Mobil 1 synthetic oil with changes every 10000 miles.

There are economies realized with this truck that go far beyond simple fuel mileage. For example, I just had new brake rotors and pads installed -at 300000 miles- the old rotors had been turned once and pads replaced-once. Spark plugs every 120000 miles. Changed the radiator fluid once. Replaced the serpentine belt only because I thought it was a good idea. Has a timing chain so no belt to replace. Everything else is original. Battery, exhaust system, no rust, runs like the proverbial swiss watch. Even the light bulbs stay lit. If you use E85 the mpg drop and E85 and regular are so close in price that I don't bother with E85. If you use E85 more than 50% of the time you're supposed to change the engine oil every 5000 miles. For me, it's the perfect truck. Quiet, quiet. I can't stand noisy trucks with all the driving I do. Good ride, too. Oh, I almost forgot. Greaseable zerks on the driveline. Keep it lubed and go a million miles.
 
'10 5.7 Double cab Local driving, lots of idling, lots of 4wd, drops as low as 12.5 on winter blend. Local driving in summer runs closer to 15. I rarely drive long distances. I use the Civic or Impala for road trips. Tires make a big difference. I have heard that heavy accessories make a notable difference. My only additions were a LineX spray in line, a weather tech floor liner and step bars (short legs). When it dies, I'll buy another just like it.

Worst, towing an 18 foot trailer hauling a John Deere 750 with a brush hog mounted: 12 +/-

This truck beats the '07 GMC K2500 with the 6 liter it replaced in every category. Looks, comfort, ride, mileage, dependability, fit and finish and towing.

Plus, it goes like a scalded ape when you put your foot in it. (You do pay bigtime at the pump for driving like a 16 year old...)
 
We leased a 2010 with 5.7 Double cab-sold that to our son-Leased a 2015 5.7 Double Cab ditto to what Fawteen said on mileage, maybe even a little higher when it gets broken in with 30,000 miles, it will get up an GO too.

GMC K2500 is a 3/4 ton. Probably has relatively low axle gearing. Toyota is a 1/2 ton, with higher gearing. That's kind of like comparing apples to oranges.

If the Toyota will tow equal to what you towed with the GMC, then the GMC was way more truck than you needed.
 
I have an 07 I ordered new. It rides like a Cadillac. It's the "good" pickup so it sets a bit. I think it has 80,000 miles on it now. 20 isn't unheard of on the highway. One of the first things I did was pop the carbon filter out of the top of the air cleaner box. It was to prevent engine gasses from getting into the air when it was shut off. An instant 1 1/2 mpg increase.

5.7 liter SR5 4x4. Because I ordered it when the first came out there were a good many gremlins. I should have waited a year but Toyota has been very good to me. They are in it for about $17,000 in repairs but never even bat an eye when I need something.

allows all over the road?........like a ship in a storm?...like a Cadillac? Too bad. Sorry for you.
 
I drive 2013 Tundra extended cab 4X4 4.6 it now has 120,000 miles not a bad truck 6900GVW and it always weigs in at 6850 never any less MPG runs around 12 to 15 and when pulling a small trailer around 9 to 11 has been trouble free.
