strange John Deere Model L rear wheels

I have a Friend who died recently and I am helping sell an L tractor for his Wife. It has 8.00 by 22.5 truck tires on the rear. The rims look like factory rims. Did John Deere have 22.5's as an option from the factory??? He also has a set of 20 inch rear wheels and I can't get a good measurement to tell if there is any difference, but could 22.5's be mounted on 20 inch wheels??? The 22.5's seem to fit the wheel perfectly. Does anyone have any knowledge or thoughts on this??

Thank you for any information

I believe this LA 24 inch wheels L 22 inch. I have seen some L's that had the center welded to truck rim once original rusted out.

I know that the way the bead is tapered on a 24.5 tubeless truck tire they will fit on a 24 inch rim, that's what my cat road grader has on it now. In fact they fit so well they even sealed up tubeless

These wheels are not welded and have factory rivet's in them. I guess I will have to find a way to measure them to be sure. It could be like markct says, the 22.5's may fit the wheel.

Thanks for the reply's

I agree tire sizes shouldnt be mismatched, but in this application if you look the true id of the bead fits tight on a 24 flat bead type rim, also with the 1 1/4 flange on early rims there is pretty much no way the tire could come off over the bead. I was leary at first doing it on my road grader which is very heavy and needs 60lbs in the tires, but i studied it and measured and was confident it was safe, with a small tractor like that the air pressure would be much lower and even safer. I would NOT try it on a high pressure application or on road application, but it does work in some limited off road applications.

The 22 inch tires came on the "L" from the factory. Then later when they were hard to find, many people cut the center out of 24' rims and welded them to the 22" "L" centers which now made them use a more standard 24" tire. The "LA" came with 24' wheels standard.
