Here comes the water

All the rain you guys have been getting up north has made its way down the Mississippi river.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said they will most likely start opening a spillway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge this weekend as the Mississippi river reaches flood stage and has a flow of 1.25 million cubic feet per second about twice its normal flow. This spillway will divert 250,000 cu ft/sec out of the river. This spillway has been open 10 times since it was built in 1927. It is our main source of flood prevention as it has no man made structures in it.

There is also talk they may have to open another spillway north of Baton Rouge if the river continues to rise and gets to 1.5 million cu ft/sec. This spillway has only been open twice. They use it as a last resort because it will flood 4 homes and about 100 hunting camps. It will also flood many acres of farm land. This floodway will divert 600,000 cu ft/sec

While we usually deal with this in spring with snow melt water making its way down river this is the earliest in the year we have ever had this much water.

Well I would say I do not understand but I have probably a full year or more work just to get back to normal up here in Missouri. Did a walk around today and found fences that have been standing in the same place with out needing any work for well since the early 80s that are now down and trees up rooted etc etc

I do not know about the one up river but the one down here by me is timbers slid down into a slot.
They hook a crane to the top of the timber and pull it up and set it to the side.
Once the river level falls and the water flow stops they can replace the timbers into the slot.

They have been selling crawfish since last month with all this warm weather we have been having but this cold snap has probably sent them back under ground.

In my honest opinion; floods like this are probably the best thing that could happen to crawfish. When they open the spillway north of Baton Rouge it forces the Corp to divert fresh water out threw the swamp (Atchafalaya Basin) to the gulf. This mimics the way nature use to do it and flushes the swamp of stagnant water.
On the other hand oysters will suffer because they need salt water.

Like they say the two things not to talk about are religion and politics unless you are prepared for a argument.
Around here Mississippi river diversions ranks right up there with them.

Thanks Larry but really no worries for us.
While people up north have only the river as a water drain; and when it over flows they are in major problems;

For us it is just a matter of getting past the politics and diverting the water out other channels to the gulf.
We have diversions capable of handling over 5 times normal river flow.

In fact the river is at about 1.25 million cu ft/sec flow right now with all this flood water.
We can handle double that with all the diversions open so we are no where near a flood risk right now.

Pretty obsolete gate system. If Congress ever gets serious about funding flood control on Mississippi, they would surely convert to tanner gates there.

Thanks for posting as that is some interesting info. I am 40 miles from the Mississippi river in WI,it sure is different on my end from yours. Tom

I am in a Lab on SCSU campus and about 300 ft from the river. Looks pretty good here, not an excess, but making nice power in our local 18 foot head dam. Jim

Why would you something better that is used once every ten years???

I think they are called Tainter Gates. The timbers look like a great system to me. Never fail, and a little leakage during high water is no big deal. All in all fit for service. Even with Tainter Gates you would want to use the crane to adjust them because of infrequent operation.
