Nice Carving

I would say that it is indeed carved from the graphite. And you should be aware that most places have a group of fellas that get together monthly or so in an informal woodcarving club. Check thru your community ed or ask around. Usually a close knit group...they all know each other and frequently for a long time...but you might learn something and enjoy yourself. I had a client for years who did this. He was always trying to get me to join. Wish I had in retrospect.
 
There used to be a little gas station in Pleasant Valley NE, which was a wide spot in the road, that had a whole room of carvings like that from a local man. Like a bird carved on the end of a toothpick, etc. I believe they are now in the museum in Hartington NE.

I've seen people carve things out of black walnut shells with nothing more that a pocket knife. Those shells are tough as nails.
 
seen this a week or too on fb,,, that guy has real talent, I seen he has done chain links and many other things from pencils

There are all kinds of magnifiers a person can use to help improve your vision. I use a jewelers loupe in order to see the parts of a watch I may be repairing. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to do the work.
 
Nice! I guess to some that would be a relaxing hobby. To me it would be an exercise in futility and a pounding head ache!

Amazing what people can do... Think of building a watch 200 years ago!
