Among the various terrible things that happened this summer, my father passed away. I inherited his 94 Ford ranger. I'm fixing it up partly for sentimental reasons-- he was a thrifty guy who liked to tinker. I fixed the starter and the brakes and did some body work. It starts hard. If you pump the gas repeatedly and hold the gas to the floor, it will start. It has fuel injection. 4 cyl, 2.3, 8 spark plugs. I don't know much about fuel injection-- anyone have an idea what would be the most like culprit? Check Engine light is on but it runs fine once started. Starts easier after warming up, usually. Gets great gas mileage. Thanks

you dont pump fi.but check fuel pressure regulator usualy round chrome with vacum hose. maybe leaking internally and drawing fuel through vacum hose

I haven't done the plugs. I'll start with that. They are fairly squeezed in. If that doesn't help, I'll try the regulator. I know that you don't pump fi but it seems to get the thing going. Maybe my imagination. Thanks for the help

Those engines have two coil packs if I remember correctly.

They only use one while cranking, I have seen that one go bad several times.

I can't recall though which one is which, they are both the same, try switching them and see if it starts better.

Just a thought or two. How long did the truck sit without being driven? Has the fuel filter been changed recently? I have seen vehicles that did not run well because a mouse or other critter had chewed up the air filter which messed up a sensor, As someone suggested, if you can get it to a parts store such as Advance, most stores will hook a diagnostic meter to it and read the codes for you, which can save time and money for you. (And helps them sell parts).

If you hold your foot to the floor and it starts, it is flooded, that tells the computer to shut the fuel off.
