Equipment Updating

So with the grain prices dropping and expenses rising except fuel are any of you planning on buying more new or used equipment, or holding onto what you have? I was thinking about selling the JD4440 and possibly the IH966 but keeping the 5020 and 4640.

I have been upgrading seriously for the last few good years, and paying for everything as I go. I hope I can do something different for a disc harrow for next year.

Marv, you are getting rid of two of the best tractors from each maker. Rethink that unless they are worn out.

The skid steer has one more payment. I am going to pick up a new cab chore tractor this weekend. That's going to be my big expenditure. I have been planning for it since summer and it shouldn't be a big hit. I only have a 4020 that has rear singles so I have been raking and square baking without a cab. I'm getting too old for that. This winter I will have a single wheel cab tractor to feed with and summer I will have air but not duals. The 7800 is sure nice with FWA but it has duals so feeding with it is a pain.

I have a 4440 that's been on the farm for about 25 years. It is a great machine. It used to be the planting tractor but now does spraying and fertilizing. It even got grain cart duty this year. I'd be lost without it. It will be a "till I die" tractor.

I would reverse what your keeping and selling. The JD 5020 is not a great tractor the JD 4440 will out work it day in and day out. The IH 966 is a very solid tractor and the JD 4640 is an OK tractor but the 100 only PTO makes it a real pain on a livestock farm.

I am kinda looking out for a 4440 or 4450 for next year, did not want to encourage him to keep it.

LOL

Only thing we have done and the only thing we will do for next year is rolling our sprayer over to a new one.

Our tractors are good newest 3 yes old. Oldest with cab and air is a 83 AC 6060. Use it to spray and bale. Need to find a good used pull type sprayer. In our price range. Thought might get a oil well. But when price dropped, they fell out of gear. LOL.

Doesn't a 5020 also have a 1000 rpm pto ? plus the pto in them won't hold up either if used heavy !

Nothing will change here. Next spring I will be renting the same tractor I rented last spring for the small amount of tillage I will be doing so I can keep my two older tractors on easy jobs like the planter and sprayer. I hear so many stories anymore about transmission replacements costing from $15,000-$30,000 and it makes renting a tractor for 50 hours or so sound like a darned good idea.

I will keep mine, they run when I ask them to, use far less fuel than the new ones and are paid for, I only farm 800 acres so no need to change now, they are also matched to my equipment

The 4440 has a quad and will need a overhaul in the next year or so. The 5020 has been completely redone with a new engine from John Deere. The 966 has all kind of issues that if added up would cost more than it sold for when new. The 4630 only has 3400 hours. Only row crop 400 acres. I still have several more tractors including a nice 4020. Was looking at getting 5085M JD but read the reviews and it seems that have lots of computer and sensor problems.

Bigmarv your reasoning make sense now that you explain the tractors better. Instead of the JD 5085, look at a good JD 6310. It is about the same size and twice the tractor as far as durability goes. IF you want a smaller utility then the JD 5510 is a good one and it is about that 75 PTO HP too.
