Pig feed price

Someone had a post about the price of pig feed day or two ago. just picked up a bag yesterday. Figures out to $360 per ton. It does seem a bit high in light of corn and soybean prices right now. Corn, barley and soybeans are the only grain ingredients. The rest of the list consisted of minerals and vitamins. 15% protein, 3% fat and 4% fiber.

The last bag of laying mash I bought came out to $560 per ton.

I'm still trying to figure out how feed in general went to $15-20 a bag when corn and beans went to $7 for corn, then when corn dropped to $3.50, the feed is still up at $15-20 a bag. Sort of like milk bringing about $40-50 at the store when the dairyman is getting $17 and paying the largest cost of production. Some salesman must be living high on the hog....

my last 14% steer pellets were 288 per ton delivered from ADM.
but that is bulk and pretty bags are not included.

Buying complete feed is always high. Grinding and mixing your own helps a little with the cost. But if you're only feeding a small number of animals the cost of the equipment doesn't work out.

I run out of SBM and mineral so I had to buy half a ton of feed a few weeks back. Got it bagged from local mill for $7/50lb bag which works out to $280/ton (13% CP).

Chicken feed (layer) was $12/bag or $480/ton.

I buy calf creep feed in the bulk delivered. I ordered a load yesterday and it was $213 a ton cash price. I also buy a corn/gluten ration in bags for $260 a ton. This is from a local feed mill. Any feed that is sold through a store is marked up considerably.
