Battery tenders

I think I should put a battery tender on my JD 2510 this winter. It has 2 twelve volt batteries in parallel. The positive cables from each battery connect to the starter. So,

1. Can I put the tender on at this common point and connect one side to the frame or do I put it on one battery and it will tend both?

2. What brand and size should I be shopping for?

You can hook it to the common positive starter supply and it will work fine. as for brand I have several Schumacher ones and they work well. As for size it really does not matter for a maintenance charger/maintainer it will have time so even a smaller wattage/amperage one will work.

YES since they are wired in parallel, the common + and the common - is a suitable place for charging BOTH. Usually a battery tender (subject to its rating) can supply sufficient current for tender and maintenance of two parallel batteries as it doesn't take all that much current for your purpose. There are so many different brands out there (and many are dirt cheap) Id hesitate to recommend one in particular but as posted below Schumaker (spelling??) seems to be decent quality. I like them to rest on a metal surface as opposed to wood or anything near combustible but that's common sense and also consider it and the cords location being subject to critters.

Done that with my old diesel farm truck that doesn't get used much. Dual batteries and one charger, the less than $10 at Harbor Freight. Batteries always fresh and ready.

I have 5 of the Schumakers. Bought them on Amazon. 3 old Farmalls, one zero-turn mower, and a truck that doesn't see much use. All 5 are ready to go when I want them to.

I love the Shumacher units from Wally world stores. They cost $19.95 and work great. Nice thing is they are 6 and 12 volt and they select the voltage automatic. Charge at 1.5 amps and then go to an automatic exercise cycle. I will post a picture when I get home.

I now use them on everything that has electricity close. i believe it extents tractor battery life!

I just can't bring myself to leave them hooked up all the time. Especially since they are from China. I'm afraid they might start a fire.

I actually brought a 12 volt battery back to life with one of those. One of those deals where if you started the tractor every other day, all was well, but if the tractor sat for 3 or 4 days, the battery was dead. Put one of those maintainers on it, and now the tractor can set for 2 to 3 months, WITHOUT the maintainer, and the battery has plenty of life in it. Don't know why, but I ain't lookin' a gift horse in the mouth either.

Why not the solar ones? They work great for me. Most of my sheds face the south.

I have 4 of them in different sizes and plan to buy a few more.

I have one at the hunting cabin (no electricity down there) it charges a 12V battery that runs the RV pump on our water system. Pumps water to the kitchen sink. The current battery has been there 3 or 4 years, always kept charged with a small solar charger.

Just recently I put up a solar powered "porch light" that I got at Harbor Freight for $20. Lights up the main side of the cabin very nicely.

ell, then, you probably have a lot of other Chinese wall warts that you need to be afraid to leave plugged in, among other things, such as cell chargers, cordless phones, cable or satellite boxes, clocks, toothbrush & shaver chgrs, computer eqmt, even the TV (it is still on even when it is off).

Here ya go. These work great!
