This morning I was in my 3 wreck since July 2. Done of them my falt. First 2 cars did not slow for stop signs. First wiped out my 16' tandem trailer, did not hurt the truck at that time. About Sept 22 they did total my Dakota with me in it and I got a broken rim. Then this morning about 6:00 total dark headlights facing toward me, could not see my lane till right upon the lights, lane totally whight, hit breaks but too late. The white was a load of bottled water spilled on road where a truck going same way as me had hit the trailer with the water and tore the drivers side clear off and back end the trailer bumper was the same height as my windshield of my Dodge grand caravan. Went thru the water and completely over the side of the trailer that was laying on the road. Took out my windshield, front dorr pillar and put a dent in top full length from that bumper, the duals on the trailer took out the left front fender amd both the drivers and sliding door and the back side window complwtely gone. Was ablt to get with help my drivers door open. Turns out the water loaded truck went left of center, think from a wind gust and when that happened the truck going ahead of me clipped the back end, this truck was hauling soap and left side of it riped open, when he hit he lost control and went across the road where a truck comming towards me hit him in right side opening that up. That truck was hauling what I think was base for a wind turbine. I got stoppedprobably less than a hundred feet from hitting front of the 3rd truck. There were 2 cars behind the water truck that escaped being in the mess except they were traped. Both trucks headed toward me had just left truck stop after filling up with fuel. I think the fuel tanks survived but not sure. Sherif brought me home while mess was being cleaned up and my van was wating to be towed. So going to be hunting a different vehical and lesst han 2 months since I had to do that for when truck was totalled. The driver with the pole said his back was tightening up and was going to see a Chiropractor, one driver I do not know about, driver of water truck had left side of face scraped up from where he said his mirrow was pushed into his face. I whent to the chiropracter for my back and to see him tomorrow again. Could have been a lot worse but was still going to take several hours to clean up, after 2 hours when they brought me home were just starting to get that tower base resecured to the flatbed hauling it. So 3 wrecks for me since July second and my wife bought both the vehicals destroyed and if that wasen't enough it was just this past March 16 that I list her from heart attac. Getting to be almost more than I can take. Am now 72. Just had to vent.

Leroy,

At 72, three's no joking around, your ability to heal may not be what it was.

We'll pray for a complete ands speedy recovery.

Best of luck,

D.

I am 75. Have never had a car accident other than a dented fender from a parking lot post. You need to start driving defensively. Assume the other drivers are not going to stop for you . Get a GOOD driver to ride with you and give you some tips. I taught my daughter all the defensive skills and she is 42 and has never had an accident.

When they come at you at 50 mph and you cannot see themuntill they are within 50 feet of you no mater how defencive you are you cannot control things and in this case his headlights blinded me when I should have been able to see things.

It's a good idea to hit the brakes any time that you can't see. lights of oncoming vehicles make it difficult to see, but you need to still be watching the fog line or edge of the road ahead along with most of your lane.

I think we all sympathize with you. You've had some tough times. Working in the oil industry, the concept is that all accidents are preventable. That includes going slower, never driving when you can't see, even to pulling off the road and stopping. You have to think differently in order to avoid things like drunk drivers crossing the line into your path. It means not going the speed limit, maybe not driving after dark on some roads, and avoiding driving in inclement weather. There are companies that discipline employees who don't drive ultra safely even though it means longer travel times and missed meetings. It is worth the effort to do everything you can to not let someone else hit you.

At 72, maybe your eyes aren't what they used to be. I am 72 also & headlights blind me very easy even if I don't drive anymore.

I can relate to what you are saying about the headlights blinding you.

Travelling to town one morning, still dark out on a secondary two lane highway I came over a hill, there was a truck pulled over on the shoulder with its high beams on facing me, for a split second you cant see a thing, a second later right in front of me in the middle of my lane is a guy standing between two horses, locked up the tires on the old pick up but it was clear there was no way I could stop in time, let off the brakes and cranked hard on the wheel, missed them by feet, amazing I didn't roll the truck.
His horses got out, he went looking for them in his truck and had his high beams on, spotted the horses, pulled over and got out to grab the horses at the same time I was coming over the hill.
Was a lot more than horse manure to clean up that morning.

A article in the local paper today is discussing what to do about the hospital entrance onto the main highway because of a wreck that laid a UPS truck pulling triples onto its side. The wreck happened a football field length before entrance drive. The guy pulled over in front of the UPS truck, was not suppose to be driving, doctors orders, but yet our city commissioners wents the state to do something to make the entrance safer.

I sort of know what you are going through. Sometimes it feels like they are all out to get you. Someone was watching out for you ! I hope things start going for the better !
A year ago at the end of June I lost my father in law. Then later that year I had a uncle on my Mom's side take a sudden turn for bad and he passed away. Then not long after that Mom's other brother passed away after a long time of being bed ridden. Somewhere in here my wife lost an uncle on her side of the family but he lived pretty far away. Then after all of this around the end of last school year I had a school bus pull right out in front of me and try and take me out ! With a lot of luck and quick maneuvering I took my car off road and just missed the bus. All of us were ok even the car. Then after that had a close call with some deer. Sure looked like we were on a collision coarse when all of a sudden the lead deer turn and headed back up the field.
I've sure had more than enough funerals and close calls too !
I hope I'm good to go for a long while. I think you are in Ohio too ? Must be some bad mo joe around here I hope it blows over !

3 accidents in a year is pretty bad. Maybe you should take a defensive driving course. My old neighbor, now passed, had similar problems. He totaled 3 vehicles in a year. And somehow, none of it was his fault, even when he rear ended a parked truck, on a 2 lane road in the middle of nowhere....

I'm not so sure the last wreck was not your fault... If there was already an accident and you "blindly" drove into it.....

You might want to drive only in daylight, or get your eyes checked.

Sounds like I'm picking on you, but I'm not. Glad your ok.

Most times it's best to do everything you can to avoid any auto accident. Taking an extra few seconds to slow down or stop when things don't look right can prevent a lot of problems, expenses and unnecessary pain.

"AARP Smart Driver? 4-Hour Online Course" is available at www.aarpdriversafety.org for about $20. It has also been called "55 and Alive". Some states offer the class in an actual class room setting. The classroom setting is very easy: you just listen and participate in the discussions and everyone passes, no exam. In MN completing the class knocks 10 percent off your car insurance premiums by law, so it is very popular.

Now-a-days there is really no excuse for driving like Mr. Magoo.

WOW. I think I'd be thinking about a different route, or something. Maybe hire the neighbor kid to drive, that way everyone could blame him for it.

My wife got in a wreck 2 months ago, and ever since we got the van back from the shop it seems like deer, turkeys, and other motorists are trying to wreck the new paint job.... So far both of us have been good while driving it, but the brakes have definitely been tested a time or 2...

Seems to be "pick on Leroy" day today. So, here goes <grin>.
While there may have been some small percentage of responsibility on Leroy's part, the comments about defensive driving are simply out of line. For one thing, none of us were there to see what happened. So, why pass judgment on the guy without ALL of the facts. Some COLLISIONS are simply not avoidable. I REFUSE to call them accidents. There is NOTHING accidental about another driver running a stop sign or traffic light and hitting another vehicle. And in those cases, there is NO LEVEL of defensive driving that could prevent what the other guy does. After all, in most cases it takes TWO vehicles to make for a collision.
My girlfriend continually scolds me for using my horn. Like when I see somebody coming at me in my lane, or the idiots that approach an intersection going full speed, and then slam the brakes at the last possible second as if they had not had any intention of stopping. And, when I see a car waiting at an intersection, and the driver is looking the other way, and I see ANY wheel movement, that driver will hear my horn, long and LOUDLY.
Oh, and this business about never having had an "accident?" All I can say is just dumb luck. While your cautious and defensive driving may have prevented many possible collisions, not getting hit by some other bad driver is simply luck. No other way to put it. So, wear it like a badge, and use it as a bragging point, but KNOW THIS - it is just as much luck as it is caution and skill. No matter how defensively you drive, there is no way to control the actions of others.
Leroy, I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. I'm sure that she was taken from you at a much too young age.

Well said. I was thinking I ought to post again something along the lines you just wrote. Thanks for doing all the typing. LOL.

When I started driving (legally) some 36 years ago to today in the very same area it sure is a different world ! I see so much crazy stuff on the roads just going to and from work. So many cell phone distracted drivers too !!!!!!

I don't see it as picking on "Leroy day". Sure you can sit there and pass judgement on what the other posters intent was in what they posted, but it is generally not a good idea to try to read others intentions. What I see is a bunch of guys who are concerned for Leroy, and know that driving particularly after dark, gets harder as you age. Also most of us passed on condolences to Leroy back at the time of his wife's passing. Having noticed the general tone of your posts it does not surprise me at all that you have a tendency to lean on your horn long hard and frequently.

I don't like driving at night but sometimes just no other way. and was only 1 year ago eye exam and new glasses. I don't think any of you would have spoted things soon enough to have avoided it. I would say that with the amount of traffic it had to have happened within 15 seconds of the time I got in it. No time to get any warnings up. Traffic was running less than a quarter mile between vehicals on average, a lot perhaps only 2-300' between vehicals. You see something comming at you and you do not expect the back part to be laying across the road so you just try to keep in your lane of traffic.

First one Auglaize county, second one Allen county and last one Mercer county, all in Ohio So different routs would not help.

Thanks for your words. And you could not see those stop sign runners before they were on you. And those were in the daylight, when the truck was hit I had cruse set at 45 due to load I was hauling and when trailer was hit cruse was set on 50, all 3 in 55 MPH zones. And I think my wife was taken young at age 64.

So, it sounds to me like you think that all of this happening to you is just really bad luck. Maybe it is, or maybe you are not nearly as observant as you need to be. I am not trying to pick a fight, but if you don't do something different, you may not be coming home next time.
Years ago an older couple stopped at a four way intersection. There were not any other cars at the stop signs and so they proceeded to enter the intersection and were killed by a drunk doing about 70 mph. I'll bet that most of us would have done it same way. Why aren't we looking down the cross roads to make sure that all the traffic is going to stop? Being right or having the right of way will not save us from being killed
