Calling JD seller

Have a Deere 2355 that a guy at work was using.Lost the steering and the loader hydraulics.Checked the oil and was a little low so we added a quart. Worked for 5 minutes. If we let it sit for a half hour it would work for another 5 minutes or so. Hauled it home and changed the oil filter on the bottom of the trans. I could see some very very small flakes in the filter. Took an oil sample from the filter into a white plastic cup and used a magnet on the outside of the cup and can pull small particles of metal from the oil.I am thinking that while the tractor sits for a while the metal that has plugged the filter settles out and we get flow for a little bit. We are going to get it fixed but could use your or others input on where the metal is coming from and what our next move should be. Thanks

Not JD seller but I will offer my input. I take it that the filter you refer to is the filter element, not the pickup screen. The pickup screen is behind the large plug on the side of the transmission housing just ahead of the Left axle housing. The oil will need to be drained to check this screen.
I think your problem is more likely a high pressure leak. The most probable and easiest to check is the rockshaft valve. With the tractor running, look in through the transmission oil filler toward the front of the tractor for an oil spray or stream. If this is the case you will need to overhaul the valve. There is a kit that will get you all the pieces you need.
The other areas that could leak are the steering or SCVs...these will get warmer or hot if leaking internally. Post back if you have more questions

Tom drain the hydraulic oil and remove the sump screen. It sounds like you may have lost the brake linings and they are plugging the sump screen. Quit running it until you make sure that the sump screen is clean. If it is dirty then fix the brakes before using it much more. If the sump screen is clean then you may have broken a line in the transmission on the charge pump side of the main hydraulic pump. This was much more common on the earlier Manheim tractors and not the 55 series.

First check the sumps screen,

Thanks for the replies. Im kinda new to tractors so your help is helping a lot. I guess i should ad that this has done it a year or so before. They ended up changing the oil and filter a couple of times. The filter element is out of it now. I didnt get time to put the new filter in yet, so maybe we will check the screen. When i picked up the old filter and inspected it, i could see like dirty oil and small particles coming out of it, like it could be plugged. The brakes as i remember work fine, but that i guess doesnt mean they arent starting to come apart. This gives us something to go on. Thanks, i will keep you posted. Tom

According to JD parts schematic sump screen(parts key 15) is accessed on RH side by trans filter. I agree the sump screen should be checked before operating tractor any more. Also be sure filter relief valve in parts photo below isn't stuck open. JD utility tractors with hyd hi-lo & hyd ind pto have a history of supply tube or tube seal failures. What type valve controls loader? If an ind valve it's possible if it's the convertible type that CC plug seal has blown.
